Playstation is not and has never been a profitable business. The point of Playstation, as with Xbox is to take the living room. It is a vanity project to maintain and grow Sony's brand name with the newer generations. Basically Playstation as a whole is marketing for their other products. Very expensive marketing. Microsoft and Sony's business models would not work without a megacorporation behind them to front the losses. It just isn't a financially viable business on its own. Without a big name and bank account behind them, they wouldn't exist. In all of history only one company has been able to maintain itself on its own, due to hoe it has done business, a severely different way to its competitors. The Sonysoft model of paying out the ass for deals and taking losses on expensive hardware just won't fly. SCE can't be on its own.
The reason MS never has to worry about this is that they are funneling Nokia money to cover Xbox losses as their mobile division and Xbox fall under the same blanket.

This. I don't think people understand that there is a cost that goes into RnD. Sony had a ton of money in 2000 because the ps1 was a success for 7 years. In 2006 again because the ps2 was such a huge success. Then they spent a bunch of money making the ps3 which fell flat out the door and stuggled to meet the expected demand to return their money. The ps3 is finally doing well and has likely paid back the development cost and is probably even selling at a profit at this point. The ps4 out the gate is doing fantastic and sales are only going to rise come holiday season. That combined with the games set for release early next year they'll be fine. At least SCE. I think they'll need to do some serious cuts to other divisions and hopefully turn the train around. and it really wasn't that good either. By the end of it's lifespan the gameboy was extremely outdated technology, and the GB color was the same shit visuals+color. The problem was that the GameGear prioritized power over efficiency. The GameGear was just too powerful for its own good.
The GameBoy Color also should have come out a few years earlier, imo.
The GameBoy lasted a decade before getting replaced and frankly, aside from Mario Land (and the original wasn't that good), Tetris, Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2, Link's Awakening, Metroid 2 and Pokemon, there wasn't really anything great on the system.

Not really. I'm a sony fan but nintendo used to actually try with their console hardware. It wasn't until the wii that they stopped giving a fuck and kept selling outdated shit. The handheld market has always been theirs so they had little reason to care. That's not the point I was making bring up the game gear. Hardware performance and durability will go up as competition forces companies to make better shit. Nintendo had no competition so even though a technically superior device was released a decade prior they still insisted on selling up low tier shit like the gameboy because it printed money. Competition is good. It's what stops us from having a device released in 2012 with a lower pixel density than the ngage. There's really no excuse for it. Durability doesn't need to go down as hardware goes up.

During the 6th gen they had objectively, the most powerful console on the market and it cost not even 1/2 of what the ps2 and xbox cost.

Battery technology hasn't advanced as quickly as the rest of the hardware. The batteries can't keep up with the processors in terms of power consumption which is why everything has a shorter and shorter battery life despite similar size batteries.
Unless you want to have a system that has a massive battery, you won't be having something like the GBA SP or DS Lite where it can last 20+ hours on a single charge.
