What kind of environments do you like to see in your preferred genre of video games?

Also, if anyone knows a game with large expanses of forests, please tell me the name.
>>
>>263798905
Skyrim with mods can have nice looking environments.
>>
>>263798905
>large expanses of forests
This

None of the environments I truly want to see don't exist yet AFAIK

Speaking of environments I fucking love them so much I love abandon looking areas thats been overturned by nature and I love cybercity playgrounds

I love old hidden temples that're cozily packed between a lot of trees

I really dont know why I'm focusing on Character art for vidya I love environments more...
>Tfw i'll never be Tor Frick

>>263798905
>Big, lush forests, devoid of all insect life
>Big, crowded cities and small, lonely-seeming settlements that actually make sense. Devoid of all insect life
>Big, crashing rivers and small flowing streams. Again, devoid of all insect life
>Dark, mysterious caves and tunnels. And by dark, I mean as dark as a hundred year old cave would be, so no recently-lit torches at ALL times.
>Devoid of all insect life
Feels good, man
>>
>>263801298

Whats wrong with insects?
>>
I just want a mountain that actually feels like a goddamn mountain and not a pointy hill. Like, a fucking mountain that is by itself the size of an entire 'zone'.

Speaking of forests, they are never dense enough. Stupid archaic character movement, can't have anything that requires anything more complicated than walking.
>>
>>263798905
I like lush forests too, especially North Eastern US forests. REmake and Outbreak File 2 had pretty good forest areas, but they weren't big enough.

I like fantasy settings the most, with lush forests, mystic ruins, and creepy dungeons. Cozy towns in the middle of forests with trees in them. All the good shit.

Sci Fi settings also can be cool, but it takes a shit ton amount of detail to make them really convincing and giving you the feel to actually live in them.
>>
>>263801790
Can you make it any brighter and blurrier?
>>
>>263798905

I just want a really big grassy field that actually takes time to get from one side to the other.
>>
>>263801878

It took me a while to come around to insects but they're breddy cool and useful if your an art person. Humans steal natures OC for their designs

I only really like beetles though
>>
>>263802230

I want this too

I want a character that has some extreme mobility mechanics to make it seem like It WOULD take a while to get from point A to point B in that field
Slow ass characters in big areas is stupid
Extremely mobile characters in tiny areas is even fucking stupider

Beetles are cool, it's just literally everything else that makes me want to burn down everything
Have you ever had a house centipede skitter up your leg out of nowhere?
Have you ever had dirt daubers shit fury all over your house?
Did you enjoy it when wasps built nests on and claimed your porch for themselves?
How did you take it when you saw bees crawling into holes in your porch ceiling?
What did you think of the ants that built several 3 feet deep colonies in your back yard?
The bugs that are cool are
>beetles
>bumblebees
>butterflies
>caterpillars
>moths
>dragonflies
>and only certain ones, but spiders
>>

Everyone should look at Feng Zhu's work or watch him paint
Hes makes great environment stuff for vidya and movies.
I wish hed go beyond the loosey production stage with some of them but they're still good
>>
>>263802981
I do, have you seriously never been to a real desert? Sand dunes, oasis's, snakes and all that neat shit?
Nothing feels better than scorching hot sand beneath your soft feet, and feeling as if you're being sandblasted when the wind picks up
>>
I don't know what you consider large, but a large chunk of the first Crysis game takes place in a forest.
>>

Tron cyberspace

Anything like Act 4 (Hell) from Diablo 2, specifically River of Flame

Towns/Cities/Places intertwined with water (like based across a lake or the ocean or a river or whatever)

Sewers that are extremely long and complex, but are really tiny in walking space.
>>
>>263801790

Also, winter landscapes.
>>
>>263798905
I can't tell if that is a real photo or not.

I don't know why but video games have a hard time giving you this sense of scale paintings give. It's almost always vast plains and mountains with a few herbs and trees or very closed, cave-like environments.

I don't remember playing a game where I looked up and saw something like this huge door or a statue and was amazed.
>>
I like art deco.

At least I liked it until Bioshock ruined it for me.

I mean, Bioshock looks amazing, but holy shit, is it repetitive. Countless expanse of art deco corridors and some of the shittiest, bland console-influenced level design, ever. Even when they add some verticality into the mix, it doesn't really feel truly vertical. It's all just flat and uniform and glossy. The only place that tries to stand out is that bit with a big open courtyard shipyard sort of place, whatever it was.

I also like space stations.

I still think System Shock 2 was the best space station in video games. The environment wasn't overdone and felt realistic rather than just a setup for a video game. I think this is crucial for immersion -- the more you try to make the environments video gamey, the less fun they end up being. Compare the masterful level design of HL1 to the crap that was HL2.
>>
>>263803039

You just named some of the bugs I hate and exactly the ones I don't mind

Had a centipede crawl on me once and I was done. Went in my basement and then Genocide

Overall I think i hate cockroaches. Not the tiny ones the fucking massive faggots that just sit there and give less fucks that you're going to squish them.

I CANT EVEN SQUISH THEM its disgusting as fuck because they're so big. I just cant do it.
I'll leave a spider alone as long as they're outside.

I had a bro near my porch light all summer he fucking demolished the mosquito for us and then my bug hating bitch made faggot of a friend seen it and got rid of it
Spiders wont harm you unless you fuck with them.

Most of them, anyway
>had big black and yellow garden spider build nest in garage right above my workbench
>stinkbugs everywhere this time of year, smells bad all the time
>get around to looking up, she caught one
>from that day onwards, grab all stinkbugs with pliers and toss them into her web
>mfw the speed she flies to them and rolls them up at
>no stinkbugs in garage for the rest of the year
And then winter came and she disappeared, her web remaining as a monument to her time spent as a vigilant guardian.

Unexplainable and bizarre constructions or formation that apparently defy both sense and laws of physics.

The sort of stuff that leave you flabbergasted because while it's obvious that they are not natural there is also no obvious way anyone or anything could have built them.

Cities or settlement built on ruins of a ancient civilization, oftentimes the ruins are so massive in size that it seemed that they were houses of giants.

Places that defy the rules of Euclidean space and topology (ie climbing down a stair and find yourself on the roof, one way "portals" rooms leading to or containing themselves and so on)

Cities built in strange ways either by technology or magic (for example on floating pieces of land or in the sea like a giant ship) with many air/ships going to and from it and a lot of commerce going on.

Forests and hills, maybe leading to a stronghold in the mountains.

Underground cities, both deep and semi-covered

Large expanses of open wasteland with interesting things in it + good atmosphere + fun way to get around

Basically, places that make you travel but also make travelling not a chore.

This thread is making me wonder about something.

Would you all play a game wherein your main goal was simply exploration?

You'd start out in pretty mild areas with simple walking running and jumping but would later advance to areas where there is possible danger and you have acquired various ways of getting around through your exploration.

>>
>>263805348
DaS itself isn't really all that big though. If you removed all combat and enemies you could probably jog to the end of the zone in like 3 minutes. For an exploration game there would have to be so much more content it would end up being massive. Unless you made everything a puzzle and gave the illusion of an xboxhueg environment, then it could work
>>
>>263805598
Wilderness survival + exploration would be fine.

Learn about the environment by looking for resources, chill out while fake nature unfolds.

There needs to be a game focused on multiplayer, small server based or something, in which you can build and maintain a town in all kinds of various terrains ranging through all of these.

There was a city-builder thread the other day. I posted about how city-builders are almost never vertical, you just build a sprawl along the ground and hope a skyscraper grows. I'm shocked we've come this far in years and no one has made a vertically-integrated city sim yet. A cyberpunk city sim, however, ought to let you build in a 3D space. You can sprawl over the ground, but real development would be stacking structures and neighborhoods on top of each other. Too much traffic congestion downtown? Upgrade the skyscrapers to support a sky-highway and sky-rail. Want a landmark but can't demolish any of the real estate it would benefit? Put that fucking castle ON TOP of a skyscraper. Deregulate the roof of a commercial space, watch people put their houses on top of a mall.

Skyrim has great concept art. It's a real shame that the artist died in 2012. RIP.

Outside of Vidya some of them actually do. Its a damn good test of skill.

I wish I remember the videos but there was 2 different guys that made some super massive areas one was Sci-fi like and the other more apocalyptic

They were breddy big

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was full of boner-inducing environments for me, but the one I loved exploring the most was the Ancient Cistern. The colours and architecture are beautiful in their own right, but the way they integrated references to Buddhist mythology and symbols into it was genius and the stark contrast between the life of the upper layer and the (un)death of the lower truly made an impact.
And yes, I did notice dem labia.

I always see this argument but I still think it's totally doable. Skyrim exists and it's not that far off, outside of the copy-pasted dungeons.

Skyrim, even vanilla, is actually a really well crafted game. I'm sure there is stuff in Markarth I don't know about yet I've played the game for hundreds of hours.

If you already released a game you can not change its core very much anymore. You can add on, yes, but if the core is not really changeable.
And MMOs usually are not graphically or environmentally impressive at all.

The only games where you could such stuff are TES games, because they have a core which is capable of creating such things and modders could have enough time if they would be more organized.

That Akira image is itself an homage to Lawrence of Arabia. I wish I had a screenshot, but Pete O'Toole does walk to his motorcycle like that in the very beginning.

I like indian architecture, but it's a shame when it's put in games they tend to be sloppy stages.

>>263810935
No but you can add to a city. Maybe you have a super-massive zone, and you keep adding on to the main city. Pretty much what expansions are for, or rather as patches, which is what they should be

Did you even take a look at that city in the painting.
The city probably had thousands of inhabitants and was detailed as fuck.
To create something like this in 3d would take years for a studio.
Skyrim is good, but the cities are not comparable at all to this.

Yet, the city will still look very poor, because thats just how MMOs look like.
Back then Dungeon Crawlers also could be huge as fuck, but they still looked like shit, because the graphics were just shit.

And a studio would never add so much to an MMO to make it look similar like in this painting anyway.
