I was mainly referring to MMOs as in MMORPGs, yes, things like planetside do work, but still, they lack depth. You will never care about who is in front of you, if he isn't your color, you shoot, if he is, you don't shoot. Thats the depth you go. Perhaps with those of your own team, you can get a bit more depth when defending a base with just a few of you left, long after the territory has been cut off (so fucking awesomely intense). But its just not a deep social experience. Which is really what MMOs could be great at. An experience that is part social and thus enables an ever changing game since the players do change. But so few MMOs do that. Most MMOs these days are simply made because people assume MMO players will stay with their game so they can milk it longer.

If the game defines the teams, there is a huge control on the PvP, the PvP is forced when you belong to different teams and forbidden when you are from the same team. If it is the players who choose to cooperate or fight, the PvP is not forced and not forbidden in any way.
