I feel a little dirty when I play someone like Olimar and have never played a Pikmin game.
Although it kind of annoys me to have a friend main Ness even though he hasn't the slightest clue where he's from.

I really only got into Fire Emblem after really enjoying playing Marth in Melee. I hadn't the slightest clue of FE before it.
Melee made me get the GBA port of Ice Climber.

I remember renting F-Zero as a kid while my dad still had his SNES. I was very surprised and confused to see it was just a racing game. I don't really remember what I was expecting, but I was confused about Captain Falcon's as a fighter after playing.
And I remember Melee getting me interested in FE, but I never actually got it. Then Ike's announcement happened and I picked up PoR and fell in love with the series.

It all depends on their future relevancy. Roy was in for advertising FE6, but was cut because he wasn't as relevant, while Ike stayed for getting two games and at least being more popular than Roy.
Awakening stuff might continue to be relevant, and Robin will stay, he could be replaced by a future MU, or he could be cut.
Xenoblade appears to be being set up as a FF-like franchise with different worlds but shared elements like battle system and mascot species, so Shulk could stay around as the first MC for that series if it takes off, especially since XCX has a created MC.

I kind of do feel a bit obligated for the most part. Smash is probably my favorite series and I want to be familiar with most of what is represented. I purchased New Leaf and Uprising after Smash was revealed back in 2013. Also, since it appeared that Shulk was going to have a likely chance (especially with all the talk of leaks) i decided to pick up Xenoblade beforehand. It made the reveal much sweeter.
That's just my opinion though, and of course it doesn't apply to everyone.

Just picked up Xenoblade after seeing the Shulk trailer, and I'm glad I did. Partially because it's a good game, partially because I'll feel a bit more attached to the character when I play as him.
I'd say it increases the novelty of the game if you're familiar with the characters, such that instead of just being big blue haired swordsman vs. little schoolboy dude, it's Ike--the same guy that defeated Ashnard and eventually even Ashera--battling against the very same Ness that fought against bizarre enemies and saved the world with the help of some other quirky helpers. It definitely adds to the charm of the game.

Growing up with 64 I had never heard of most of the characters. I recognized the Mario characters, the Pokemon, Donkey Kong and Captain Falcon. I grew up with a SNES and had vaguely heard of games like Zelda, but I didn't have a chance to actually play them.
By Melee's release I knew all of them except Marth, Ice Climbers and Samus, and by Brawl I only hadn't played Gyromite.

Smash got me into Metroid. I picked up Metroid Prime after seeing Samus in Smash 64 and Melee.
I almost picked up FE:A the other day, but it was $40 new at Gamestahp. I'm also interested in trying Kid Icarus Uprising.I'm afraid after playing Uprising I'll be like "Oh. Dark Pit is kinda neat actually" when I want to continue disliking him for the sake of disliking him.
The fist time I played Smash 64 was through emulation, on 2004. I was 10.
By the time Brawl came out I knew a lot about Nintendo and hyped the game to death; I would check the Dojo every single day before going to school.
When Olimar got revealed, I shat by pants just by how cool his playstyle was even though I had never played Pikmin; I also loved Dedede even though my contact with Kirby games was very little.
Now, seven years after Brawl, I know most of Nintendo characters and history, and I can thank Brawl for that.
Smash is more than a fighting game, it's a celebration of Nintendo's history.

I only play as characters from games I like.
I mained Samus since 64 and Bowser since Melee. Lucario was the first pokemon I used in the games that appeared in smash and now use him. I wanted to main Olimar since I love Pikmin but could never get the hang of him, but I do use him for fun. The only character to break this rule was Wolf in Brawl, I like the StarFox series and everything but never really got into it, I only mained him because I like wolves. And when I get the game I intend to main Bowser Jr because my favourite Mario game had the koopalings and Duck Hunt because I had the Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge as a kid.
