Play Mother 1 with the Easy Ring in Mother 1+2. Don't feel like a casual, it doesn't actually lower the difficulty but only makes it less tedious, you don't have to grind and the random encounter rate is tolerable. With it, I'd say it's better than Earthbound and second only to Mother 3.

EB and M3 are two of them. That's overrating them but from an analytical perspective there is so much going on behind these games that is portrayed so sincerely and subtly that I couldn't help but be utterly immersed, surprised and delighted during my playthroughs.

Even amongst the Team Silent SH games they all felt different from each other. SH 1's more pulpy horror, SH 2's much more psychological. The gameplay definitely takes a backseat to the storytelling and atmosphere though.
Either way the story in it's on an entirely different level from SH 1, 3 and 4, so I'd give it a shot. Controls might be clunky if you're not used to traditional survival horror though. The camera is MUCH more dynamic and better than early RE games.

It's very easy to overhype the games, but honestly the biggest possibly only problem I really could find with them is that Earthbound's a little unbalanced early on so you should grind a few levels every now and then.
If you don't like "old" JRPGs, then you probably won't like them.
THe thing is if you don't mind old JRPG mechanics then both EB and Mother 3 benefit from being truly unique games. The Mother series is really different from almost everything else out there.

My recent replay of Earthbound has made me value Ness a whole lot more as a vidya main character. He's amazing.

It's hard to explain, it's almost treat the game like it's their religion.
They act like the game is a messenger of love and peace, and the deepest thing in the world.
There's fanfiction, RPing, and fan comics where they try their hardest to be 100% true to the story, and create their own interpretations of various events. It kinda makes me afraid Mother 4 will be any good.
Also they have a large hatred of Reggie because they assume he's too blame for Mother 3 not being released here.
But one of the most annoying things is their love of playing victim, they act like Mother/Earthbound is the most underrated series on the planet, and almost come off as thinking we'd achieve world peace if everyone played it.

I learned about him during N64 Smash, and he was my fav to play as in Melee, but I always just took him as "kid that saves the world."
When homesickness kicked in on my recent first-time palythrough of Earthbound I thought it was incredible. It's such a simple idea, it's just a status effect, but the dialogue that accompanies it in battle is great.
Then by the time you get toLumine Hall, I was blown away. From there forward the game re-established that he's far away from home and like any kid would be scared of what's around the corner, even with the courage/strength to fight it. It's such a simple thing that adds much more depth to the character and story.

The reason you think the games are perfect is because they touch on resonant themes, OP. And because its a game that primarily made with passion and emotion rather than profit in mind. The characters and world are incredibly charming and relatable, and you'd be hard pressed to find anything as resonant as the mother trilogy. The Mother trilogy is probably the game that relies most on its director- without Itoi, the game loses so much of what makes it good. This is why Mother 4 has such a gigantic fucking hill to climb, as they have to match Itoi the god.

I was 15 or 16 when I first beat Earthbound and I listened to the soundtracks and fan albums almost exclusively for a long-ass time. I had them all organized and uploaded to megaupload along with my autistically organized folder of Mother fanart from pixiv and I'd spam them in every single Mother 3 thread when that came out. Played through Mother 3 in Japanese with a guide then again after the patch came out. Only RPG I've beaten twice.Even when I sperged over the Mother series THAT much I only visited starmen for guides
