They had the best technology, best talent, the connections and business strategy to make it all work. JRPGs in the 90s weren't great, they were just one of the best games because there wasn't any strong competition against them.
Now, the western development scene has grown by leaps and bounds, in AAA and in indie, where JP development has floundered.
But we've seen big western bets that aren't producing on either the critical front or sales front: TESO, Watch Dogs, Destiny, and Titanfall. If western devs being to flounder themselves, JP development may have an opportunity to fill in that space. Then again, so could any other single developer.

Thats incorrect. JRPGs were more prevelant in the market due to FF mainly. I don't know what's the perfect order, but I played I&II>Oath>Origins>Ark and it was fine. Origins is connected to I&II by location and the rest by protagonist so choose what's more important for you. But tbh, as long as you play I&II first it's cool, there isn't really any story connection between the games (except that Origins happens 700 years before I&II and explains some shit). Some say it's better to play Oath before Origins, because other way around you would play on the inferior engine second (Origins), but that's up to you to decide.

Changing the names to fit the current naming conventions of the series is a fucking non-issue, as is using dumb "ye olde english" as a throwback to early translations of the series.
The port has a few issues, but some of the ones you reported are actually erroneous. The Dragonlord only using fire is seriously just horrendously bad luck on your side: I had him alternating when challenging him on my first attempt. I actually had an attempt where he did only use fire, but that only happened once. His attack values being slightly bugged is legit, though.
It's definitely not on par with the GBC version, but I'd hardly call it the worst version or an abomination. It's far more bearable than the original.
