I think this is what happens when you give all of the power to one man. Sakurai is always THE director of the smash games, no opinions come before his and his opinions are final. He opened up only slightly for Smash 4 but he still had tons of control over the game.
Smash shouldnt be entirely conducted by one sole guy. Its a game that needs to appeal to all nintendo fans. There needs to be more than one decision maker on the team.
