>>
>>263117759
But if I do it i'll be making games right? or I can go in that direction? I heard software engineering is the best thing to go for for that.
Or am I fucked and should change majors quickly?
I don't have the exact names but i'm taking basics for stuff.
Have a math class, a science class, and i think a computer science class. I'll be home shortly and should be able to check my exact schedule/classes at that time if this thread is still open.
It seems like something I really would like, don't think i'll have problems with it, just want to make sure it's what i want.
I see threads on /v/ quite often that makes me a bit fearful that software engineering isn't what i want.
>>
Psychology mid tier?? Are you fucking kidding me? That piece of shit degree is what everyone who has no fucking clue what theyre doing graduates with. Also Comp Sci is one of the only degrees that's in demand and pays well; a bachelors in biology or physics doesn't pay jack shit.

you CAN, but honestly if you are just doing Computer Science to make video games for a living, switch majors. You can learn to program games off the internet and do all the shit you do for them. I would suggest taking the computer science class and if you are interested continue on, but if you find yourself bored or don't like it, switch immediately. It sounds like you are in your generals so switching won't be a big deal.

'computer related' as in 'uses a computer at work' ? a ton.
you can also do stuff like maintenance, IT, graphics design, 3d modeling, sound guy, pretty much any 'art related work'...

but the higher developing positions are more engineering-like. and you NEED a sound understanding of math for that.

after all, computers are just machines that do a lot of math very fast

software engineering is kinda an emphasis in computer science. In my school, at least, you can focus of software development in your upper-level classes. You can also focus on things like 3D object design, cryptography, Theory, Big Data, and much more. Intro CS classes tend to cover very basics of all these ideas to get you interested in what you like

No trolling, it worked out well for me.
But the main thing is that you have to have a good work ethic to get a good graduate job.

Make small websites in your own time, even if they're shitty tumblr clones which you never actually use. Show initiative.

Literature and art really shouldn't. Or rather, maybe they should, but it's honest to God not the fault of the Humanities in and of themselves that they've been co-opted in academia by SJWs and Cultural Marxists.

In a fair world, Lit and Art would be demanding degrees that required actual technical skill in writing and painting/draftsmanship, as opposed to the hugboxes they are now.

That's also why Music isn't a low tier degree either. You have no idea how demanding and technically focused (to the point of overdoing it, even) the atmosphere at a conservatory is.

He probably went calculus monkey mode (this is how we used to call it back in the Uni).

You HAVE to either be extremely smart in the research areas or have a manager-like behavior.

If not, engineering will make you become only a calculus monkey, a trained drone that only obeys and calculates shit for other people.

This is the major engineering tip I can give.

That's the thing though, History isn't just about history. It involves many courses in math, science, politics, and writing. Not as part of Gen. Ed. either, a History degree requires much more of those classes than standard Gen. Ed..

The most important thing your employer knows about you is that you are good at reading and writing, which is a very highly sought after skill for many jobs.

Something to wave around for employers to see that I can actually apply myself

Actually getting a CS job is laughable because I can only afford to go to super cheapo college, so of course they only teach you simple syntax, and never bridge that gap between "Here do this tiny math problem that makes these words go on the screen" and "How to make something another person would actually use"

Literally no degree will get you a job. That used to happen in the past because going to college was way more rare, but now that never happens. You won't graduate and have people call you asking you to accept a job anymore.

2nd year is alright, take optionals that you really don't know (not web dev, something like German or whatever) it's the only time you will.

3rd is where V-TEC kicks in (if you're a scrub). I did a lot of 'pure-CS' stuff, algorithms, FP, compiler theory etc.

It's cool, I had exactly that happen to me this year. Having decided that, I was so worried about after graduation that I ended up drinking half a bottle of vodka a night just to get to sleep. Then I got a job after like 3 interviews. Provided that it's a good course, the stuff they'll teach you will be really easily transferable to any kind of computer science job. Don't worry too much about it.

A degree isn't what gets you the job. It certainly helps (just having a degree shows you can sit down and apply yourself), but it's not all of it.

If you go into something where this is applicable, your college classes can help you build a portfolio to show off things you can do. College is also great place to start networking in your chosen field and also a place to experiment to see WHICH field you want to go into. Sadly if you're a poorfag (like me) you don't get that luxury and you have to find something and stick with it to the bitter end, liking it or not.

The only way a degree would really net you a job is if you go into something like anesthesiology.
