I'd say this was surprisingly good, but I only played it after I had finished 999 and heard that the writer usually stuck to the same type of stories when he wrote.

I liked 999 better, but mostly because Ever17 is so fucking slow at the beginning. Those routes and the true ending are gr8 though.

I also wasn't in the room with him when he was put down and some 4chan screencap from a veternarian says your animal (mainly dogs) look for you when they're getting put down. That fucking kills me to think about. It's not just Nier's scene that does it to me, any scene with an animal being put down does me in.

Journey brought me close to tears. At first I didn't realise some random person in the world was travelling with me. He would stop and look around when I did, then we'd continue forward. It all felt quite natural, like we could understand each other. Then he left. And I ended the journey alone. Great experience.

Okay as someone who hasn't touched this yet and sees this posted a lot, I'm wondering what's so bad about that in a narrative game?

Is the main character supposed to be you, the player, being a bad guy cause the game forces you to, or do they have their own character and you just control him for the purpose of making it a game?

As brutal and tragic as the narrative gets, it is still relateable. The MC, Walker makes decisions in a location isolated by natural disaster.

His motivations are clearly presented and are easy to agree with when presented from his point of view. Survival, loyalty, honor, and pain.
To answer your question, it never feels forced. You are given smaller choices in the narrative i.e. survival vs honor, compassion vs revenge. The ending you choose arguably shapes the story retroactively.

>listening to his cheerfully-bitter remarks and ramblings as you step deeper into insanity
As shitty the third "part" was, it brought me equally as much feels. Considering the plot itself was just a dying hallucination, so it's not really that important. The ending was distressing, though: entering the same room with the incinerator and hearing Red once again... oh, and those little lanterns on the steps of the staircase where you find the rope... you know who put them there for you, right?..
Also, alternative ending didn't bring me any good feelings either. I doubt it was what's supposed to be a "good ending" at all.

>>
>>262495427
This.

They expect you to feel bad for your actions, as the player, as if you're doing something other than manipulating images on a video screen.

That's not how this works. You get the player to get into the role of the player character then attack the PC for his atrocious actions in-game. Then you're maintaining immersion and making the player empathize with your characters rather than trying to make them feel bad for pixels.

if the game was so advanced that all of the actions that happened in the game were really my actions that I did because of my decisions than that would be okay. But it's not. They take the decision makeing from me and then give me the blame what happens. When I played the game i knew what those huge amount of small white blobs meant and stopped throwing phosphor but the game wouldn't let me proceed until I killed the civillians and then they shoved the pictures of those people in to my face and blamed me for those actions.

Greentexting his point doesn't make it any less valid.

If you're going to pull something like that, you have to either give the player the choice and not force them into it, or put the blame on the character and put effort into immersing the player (IE don't break the 4th wall in obvious ways constantly).

Spec Ops was a nice idea and I'm sure it had a lot of impact on retarded CoD babbies, but as far as an actual quality narrative goes, it falls apart completely.

This demo.
You can't not feel like shit for any of the endings.
>>
>>262496873
That wasn't the point at all. It wasn't about "do you feel like a hero?", it was about the player's relationship and recognition of their actions. It was deliberately breaking the 4th wall by asking you

> "Do you like what you've done? No? So then why did you do it?"

> "You made me do it."

> "I didn't make you do jack shit. I'm fucking dead."

> "Bullshit and or Fuck You."

> "Keep telling yourself that."

The meat of the "tweeeeeest" is in the internal dialogue the player is expected to have between rejection of their responsibility, and acceptance that they were a party to everything bad that happened in some direct/ indirect fashion.

It's really that simple. There is no grand philosophical awakening, or mind-blowing OMGGG SO DEEP. It's a game designed to make you feel uncomfortable and think about your relationship with the medium. It's why you're killing Americans. It's why shit goes south so repeatedly in the story. It's why the game dicks you over at several points.

The only actions the player takes is shooting some hostile mooks. Everything else is cutscenes and canned animations that the player has no control over and no agency in having happen or not happen. And no, turning the game off is not an act of player agency; it's an act of buyer's remorse.

An accurate analogy is that you're playing ball with a shitty friend. The friend deliberately breaks a neighbor's window and blames you for it. He's Spec Ops, blaming you for something he does himself.

Shit, you want a shootan game with real agency regarding killing innocents? Modern Warfare 2. Holy shit.
Despite having to do it for the character to get into the evil badguy gang, you do NOT have to shoot a single innocent in your walk through the airport. However once you get out to the tarmac, the cops show up and bullets start flying, you have to defend yourself or else the terrorists you're trying to buddy up with will turn around and shoot you themselves. They won't chide you if you choose to kill some civilians, feeling bad about it is up to you, and they don't force you to harm the civilians. You can even skip the mission and pretend that it's just an established character who did it off screen and not a player character. That is to say that MW2 made use of player agency, they didn't attribute the actions of a main character in a cutscene to the actions that the player can take.
>>
>>262499969
>What the fuck did you just fucking say about philosophy you little bitch?

Philosophy and art are subjective studies, nig. They're only able to be considered an intellectual pursuit by people who discuss it with others-- otherwise it's nothing more than a thought. You need people to argue with, like you, in order to make it a study.

They don't understand that they're learning by being challenged here.
