They're your typical turn-based RPG. I'd start with Mother 2 because it fixed the bullshit random encounters from the first one by making enemies visible on the overworld along with many other improvements, and is basically Mother 1: The Retelling in terms of characters. All three games can stand on their own story-wise even when having some references to the plot of the previous ones. Arguably, Mother 3 has the better story but is more linear.
Personally I'd go Mother 2/Earthbound -> Mother 3 -> Mother 1, but eventually play them all.

Mother 3 is a weird game while still having around the same quirks as 2 it's themes are a lot different and it conveys them well, the story in 3 in my opinion is better

Been hyped about it ever since I finished Mother 3 back in 2010. I can't believe it's been that long already, but holy shit man, only a few more months!
I also really love the music they posted so far, especially the Night theme. I heard that back in 2011 I think and it's just as good as it was then.

Am I the only one who tried to get into the series starting with the first one, wound up being in love with Mother and excited to play Earthbound, but am having a hard time playing it?

I'm still pissed that Lucas' cut, he was my main in Brawl and I preferred pretty much every single one of his moves (B and otherwise) to Ness'.
Sure they can give Ness Lucas' B moves as customs but that won't change any of his A-moves...

Wolf was pretty sweet as he was the black sheep of clones. He only had the same special moves and even then they functioned totally different from the main space animals. Mechanic-wise, I am sad (and perplexed why) he's out of it too.

What pisses me off more than that, is even though they included Lucas and New Pork City, they tried to underrepresent Mother as much as possible. 4 characters, Mr Saturn, Porky Statue, and the Franklin Badge were all the trophies Mother got. Meanwhile, Animal Crossing and Kirby are filled to the brim with characters no one gives two shits about. The Ultimate Chimera didn't even get a trophy.

It feels as if it's the kind of game an alternate universe may have made in Earthbound's place. Not the "evil" kind of alternate universe. Just the "unsettling" kind.

I played Mother 3 when the patch came out and it completely changed how I interpreted game design.
I'm right before the last boss in Earthbound, which for the past two weeks i've been playing for my first time. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as 3, but I can't put into words how much i'd overrate both these games.
They're easily my favorite games.

Those of you who say play Mother first, fine. those of you who say play Earthbound first, fine too. But let's get one thing straight- play both of them in your lifetime. The stories may have solo value, but tying the trilogy together is more than just icing on the cake.
Mother portraysGigyas as a psychic alien orphan, who is adopted by Ninten's grandparents. He is taken in, loved, but then forced by his home planet to enslave the planet that took him in. To a species of emotionless beings, feelings of love and sentiment mean nothing, but Gigyas was raised different. He was the only one of his kind to feel, to love, and to betray. He offered Ninten to come along with him not because of the power he possessed as a psi user, but a feeble attempt to repent for what he did to Maria and George.

He would not be a threat if it weren't for Porky, and his time-paradox tampering with Gigyas. by the power of prayer and the eight melodies, Gigyas is reminded of the love he once shared with his Mother, Maria. This is when he became even more scared. He couldn't handle himself anymore, and was eventually crushed by the weight of his own evil.
Not even going into theeffects all this had on Porky, I'd say Gigyas isJust as true a main character as Ness and Ninten
