I'm thinking 3DS as it seems a bit more portable than the WiiU, but I may be proven wrong as I've never touched a WiiU.

And to your other question, it's not a portable device. It just streams the input of the game to the tablet screen for some games. It has no hardware capability, to run any graphics, the console itself needs to be on and running, but the TV does not.
And even then, some games don't support play off the Gamepad screen. Smash will though.

I own both Wii U and 3DS and will only getting it for Wii U.
I bought the Wii U a few weeks ago in anticipation for Smash, got 3 games for it so far and I'll just wait for Smash to come out. I haven't decided if I want the 3DS version yet.

It's not, but that tablet controller it comes with costs almost half of the entire consoles price, if they didn't bog their first HD console down with gimmicks like a screen that ISN'T even HD, I'd consider buying one. why the fuck would you even buy the game if you don't have anyone to play it with? The majority of smash's fanbase is people who grew up with Melee or 64 and played it all the time with their friends. Just because you don't socially interact with people doesn't mean that nobody on the board does, and if OP is thinking about buying the game then I would at least hope that he has another person to play it with, in which case the Wii U version's local multiplayer is a HUGE selling point.
