Hey anon, what are some good PS1 games no one ever talks about?

Pic related. It's much better than the Trigger fanboys make it out to be. Good story with interesting characters, beautiful music and the battles are cool too.

Most turn based games still play great for PS1. PS1 games have aged far better than N64 games.
>>
>>
>>261653919
Not just psx. Most games of that time aged bad because bad 3d.
>>
>>261648024

this list is fairly accurate but it's missing quite a few, like the jade cocoon games, heat of darkness, ehrgeiz, and a few others I can't think of right now
>>
>>261655879
N64 games are like DS games, PS1 games are from that ugly Jaguar, 3DO period. Very ugly pseudo 3D sprite based graphics.

Im playing it right now

Its mediocre as fuck and the worst part

You have no way of knowing what the gems required for the evolutions are, you have to do trial and error.

There are 6 types of gems and the evolutions require an specific combination of 3 then 4 and then 5 gems

Evolutions are literally the point of the game and its literally impossible to figure them out

Those ''polygonal'' games for the PS1 are also tough to look at, very primitive and ugly. I wouldn't mind that much if the PS1 didn't have those horrible loading times. Now it really starts to bother me.
>>
>>261655468
One of the best Zelda type games ever. The puzzles are out of dis world.

Other good games no one ever talks about:

Raystorm - great shmup by Taito, with a killer soundtrack and fun, creative bosses

Vandal Hearts - faster-paced than FF Tactics, with a greater emphasis on creative levels and environmental situations than Tactics' slow grind through the AI. Lots of fun and highly recommended.

>>261648024
I'm on the fence about Legend of Mana. The game doesn't seem to click with me.

Can anyone tell me if there's a certain way to "play" right? The game feels very loosely connected, with little incentive to raise animals or use your two partners (magician kids). I love the music and world, but it's hard to get into the game itself.

Should I get Resident Evil on the PS1? Which version should I get?

I've played quite a few hours of the REmake and loved it. Should I just hunt the REmake down again?
>>
>>261657602
I feel like this is a bit of an exaggeration. To be sure a lot of 32bit games are hideous. But even games like Vandal Hearts have a charm to them.

I don't really go after the really ugly 3D games; luckily, most of the best PS1 games weren't so up-front about their 3D (eg MGS keeping things largely on a 2D plane and top-down perspective).

Some games like Einhander look excellent in that chunky PS1 style.

>>
>>261658024
Just play REmake. The only reason to pick up RE1 on PSX is to listen to the shitty music.
>>
>>261658024
The best version of the original RE is the Resident Evil: Director's Cut (not Dualshock). There's a type that says "supports Dual Shock!", but that one should be avoided for its generally lackluster soundtrack.

I really love RE1, but it might not be for everyone. The original is not as scary as the REmake, but as a game it's still quite fun. I dunno; watch videos of the cutscenes and ask yourself if you want to laugh your ass off to some truly bad line readings.

>>
>>261658024
The REmake is better. Its one of the best remakes in history of remakes.
>>
>>261658772
VS could not have looked better on the PS2. The PS1's polygon limits lent the game just the perfect amount of grit, and it helped lend a dark mood to the game that was necessary for the atmosphere. It's also reflected in the character's animations.

If you want an actual answer of how it'd look, then look at FFXII. It WOULD be that. The PS1 graphics work for the game much better IMO.

If you know Japanese than the good base of obscure game is:

>Mizzurna Falls
Murder-solving game with Twin Peaks atmosphere in mostly open world with NPC with schedules and realistic passage of time. And on PS1 in 1998. Basically Deadly Premonition a decade earlier.

>Twilight/Moonlight Syndrome + Yuuyami Doori Tankentai
Slow, realistic, mystery solving adventures. Suda51 worked on the Sydromes. The kanji/kana font in Yuuyami Doori Tankentai is somewhat hard to read.

>Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan + Zoku Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan
Ace Attorney but with 3 girl detectives in the Taishou era. All that in the style of 90's anime. There's a PC port bundled with an eroge sequel by Elf, but you know, it's post-Kakyuusei 2 Elf, better avoid it.

>Moon: Remix RPG Adventure
This one is actually pretty famous. Look it up.

>Brave Prose
A simple well-made top-down action game. Japanese-only, so it's unknown.

And like million more, so look around the net.

SNES with Phanatsia, actually. It first started being localized with Destiny on the PS1, then they ignored Phantasia PS1, and then they brought Eternia west under the name of Destiny II. And with them barely marketing the games and shortprinting them, I would have been surprised if they just dropped the series from localization completely had Nintendo not offered to handle the marketing of Symphonia for them, and shown them the potential for a western audience. Shame it took them until Xillia to really understand that marketing is effective.

Eternia, Symphonia, and Vesperia are all great entries in the series, especially starting off (Abyss is also a good game, but is far too much a love it or hate it entry or me to recommend playing it early in your experiences with the series). You should play some more of them.

And Eternia has the distinction of being the most fluid of the 2D entries they saw fit to bring west, and still holds up quite well, even if the combat is a bit unrefined. Actually handles rather similarly to Symphonia, albeit on a 2D plane (no shifting of targets can change how you line up with an enemy).

All I -really- care about is plot and character likability. JRPGs tend(ed) to put me off because of the crazy fashion and shit, so I kind of backed out of the genre a while ago (like, FF11 a while ago). Now it seems like the entire genre is to the industry what sequels are to a series.
If I can ever get ahold of them I'll try them out though. I thin k I've got an acquaintance I could borrow Abyss from.

As the guy who posted that, don't take an entirely negative stance on the genre now. Have you ever played Vagrant Story? Now that's a goddamn masterpiece. Koudelka and Parasite Eve are really cool as survival horror JRPGs. Nocturne is a fantastic game with a great story, combat system, and soundtrack.

There's plenty of good JRPGs, they're just hidden under the vastly more popular mediocre and juvenile ones.

Eternia you might have to emulate. The PSP port never made it to the US (Europe got it though), there's no PSN version even in Japan, and the original PS1 US print was shortprinted and as such it's pretty expensive ($90-120 where I live).

Abyss is a good game, but the way the characters start out can really turn players off of the game before it even gets very far. The characters are rather dysfunctional and early on bicker a lot, nitpick each others flaws, and generally don't exactly like being stuck with each other. Later on though they do admit to having their own issues and at least try to work them out, with various degrees of success (since some problems are more easily mended than others). If you can tolerate that and stick with it, you should find yourself enjoying a good, yet flawed game.

As for "crazy fashion," Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia all have Fujishima as the character designer, and he tends to do rather normal, feasible looking outfits (for a JRPG, anyway) for the casts in his games. Some of the other games like Destiny, Eternia, and Graces use Inomata, and while I'm not a huge fan of her later designs, her earlier ones in stuff like Eternia can be pretty decent (only character I thought looks really weird in Eternia was Reid, but since the game itself acknowledges his sense of fashion is dumb and doesn't treat it like something normal for that world, I grew to tolerate it pretty easily).

Not him, but let me say this. If you liked Symphonia, you'd probably at least like Vesperia as well (and possibly the rest). Tales isn't known for having all that good of writing (though a few games do it better than the rest), but rather fun gameplay, the characters, and the interactions between them.

It's a strategy game with high fantasy and a JRPG art stlye. It's pretty challenging. You can set favorite units and name them, level up and take over other nations castles. I really did not pay attention to story but there was so much of it. It was everything I was looking for at the time.

But I played on hard mode and never got gud. Been in my backlog for like a year and a half.

Destiny PS1 can be a bit hard to get into for people coming from more fluid entries, just due to how later games handle in comparison. Not calling the game bad or anything, but with Absolute Zero having pretty much adopted the Destiny DC translation effort from Cless (though apparently he can still pitch in if he wants; it just won't exactly be on his "take ten years to translate Phantasia PS1" style of timetable) since Kingcom worked out a nice PCSX2 debugger, he might want to wait for a fan translation of the Director's Cut of the remake in a few years.

No You want a Tsundere character in Tales, you'll have to look at some of the females. Or Hubert in Graces, who's an odd male example, since while he does care for the rest of the party, he spends a lot of time acting like he hates most of them, especially his brother.

Abyss' characters just don't get along well at the beginning. It's basically them being forced to work together, but without actually wanting to be with each other early on and generally doing their best to aggravate the rest of the party in various ways. Only Ion and Guy make an effort to try to get along with everyone. The cast does improve, but it takes a harsh dose of reality biting them in the ass (in so far as that not being an effective way to handle your team) for them to start on the path to improving.

More games than the 64, 64 had some great ones, but the overall ps1 library is stronger.

Dragon Quarter is really damn good, it's my favorite as well.

PE2 is more action-oriented. The gameplay is solid, but unsurprisingly the plot can't live up to the standard set by the original. The different weapons and powers lend themselves to different playstyles, and the difficulty modes change the game dramatically, so there is a lot of content.

I think it's one of the best games on the system overall.

Only thing that sucks is that it isn't compatible with modern TVs. Still, such a cool gun.

Use Retroarch with it and make sure your games have both working .bin and .cue sheet files.
