just downloaded FFT. I'm decent at most strategy vidya and I've played the shit gba version but anything i should know before getting into it /v/ ?
>>
>>261607976
It is very hard at the start of the game.

Mostly because your units are very weak and have no skills of any sort. You will die a lot.

After the first chapter though, things get easier.
>>
battles take fucking forever. it's pretty much the only thing that hinders me from enjoying srpg
>>
Check the guides for unlocking jobs, you might have a hard time unlocking them without knowing which jobs to level up
>>

That's a sequel that has nothing to do with this FFT.

Also what the guy above me said, it starts off hard. I recall not getting through Dorter Trade City the first time I played it, but I was retarded and 12.

Rotate your saves between 3 files. There are certian parts in the game where if you only have 1 or duped files you get completely fucked if you cant beat the whole sequence.

If you can get past Dorter Slums, you will be able to beat the game

Random battles match your character level average, so grinding is useless for that

Story battles are hard-coded levels, so you can potentially grind them if you have too many problems.

This, of course, only matters if you're bad at TRPGs. Godspeed
>>
Watch the first few episodes of HCBailly's playthrough, he explains the mechanics really well.

If you grind too much the game becomes a complete joke.
Don't make the main character a caster or support class.

>More classes in the PS1 ver

Nah nigga, the PSP version has the same classes + a couple new ones (Dark Knight and Onion Knight). The only thing it does about the classes is that it ups the requirements to unlock them (say, in PS1 version you needed lv. 2 archer to become a thief; in the PSP version you need a lv. 3 archer to become a thief and so on) as well as ramping up the prices for some skills, which is really fucking annoying, but still not that huge.
PSP version is not all that bad, but I do prefer the PS1 version myself. Maybe because of nostalgia + the soundtrack sounds kinda botched in the PSP version imo.

The Playstation version has a flawed and weak Engrish translation that actually cuts some dialog out of the game. Read this translation as you play, and try to find a middle ground through the dialog.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197339-final-fantasy-tactics/faqs/48627

I'm being quite serious when I say that this translation will help make for a better experience. Just ignore the bullshit the author inserted for FF12 like Humes.

Oh, and remember to take all the equipment off Gafgarion before the second battle of Act 2 - Ramza needs his shit more than he does, and Agrias eventually leaves the party when you get to that city with the Cardinal so remember to rob her too before she's gone. Towards the end of Act 3 there's a major difficulty spike where you have some super tough battles consecutively, with a battle where Ramza has a solo duel while separated from your team, and a few missions later when you enter the castle Ramza has to have a pure 1v1 duel that can be challenging before then turning into a team fight which is an absolute nightmare if you're not prepared. Oh, and immediately after that fucking tough mess you have another special battle where you lose if a character dies, while having to fight special enemies that can 1-hit ko you. Bring characters with high movement speed (ninja) and unlimited jump (from Dragoons)

Look, it's not ideal, but it helps make the story a lot better, I promise. I mean, what the fuck is a Nanten or Hokuten anyway? This translation gets points on that stuff alone.

> I've always really hated "Hokuten" and "Nanten". These are Japanese words for "North Sky" and "South Sky", and sound misplaced in a quasi-medieval setting. The Hokuten and Nanten, are, directly translated from Japanese "The Northern Sky Knight Troop" (Hokuten Kishidan) and "The Southern Sky Knight Troop" (Nanten Kishidan). Instead of this, I use "Knights of the Northern Skies" or "Knights Aquilor" (based on the northern wind, Aquilo), and "Knights of Southern Skies" or "Knights Austeron" (based on the southern
wind, Auster).

Protip for grinding at any level:

Get into random battle.
Beat down monsters and goons until there is only one left.
Bring it down to minimal health.
Monster/goon will run and hide in corner of the map and just wait every turn (unless it can heal itself, fucking yellow chocobos)
Have your own party smack each other around and heal eachother until you can't stand it anymore.

You won't get much gil, but you won'thave to click the overmap hoping for battles. It works well cuz merely causing damage or healing, even 1 HP, will get you XP and JP. You only get bonuses for killing.

Also note that when a class gains JP, everyone else on your side gains 1/4 of the gained JP as well. That's why if you had a lancer who gained 1000 JP over the course of the fight, everyone else would get 250 JP to lancer as well, even if they don't have the class unlocked yet.

So if you only want to train one guy's class, make everyone that class and just gain JP with all of them. Remember to equip JP Up as well. Likewise, if you need someone to learn two jobs at once, just make sure they participate with characters of another job so they gain JP in that one too.

Are there more games thematically like FFT and Tactics Ogre? Vandal Hearts 2 comes to mind but that's about it.

I actually liked the weird dialogue they used for their attack and spells, it felt like an ancient prayer or incantation that of course wouldn't come off as normal in whatever era FFT takes place in.

>Animals have no God.
This whole dialogue was just really fantastic, really defined Wiegraf's sister and Algus.

I hated attack lines at one part -- the opening battle where all you control is Ramza. You still have to hang around and manually skip them because even if you put it on auto battle, it doesn't skip the dialog automatically.

Other than that, I'm pretty neutral about it all.

I've been starting and restarting this game every few days for awhile. How much do signs/gender matter for endgame? Should I take the time to recruit a team that perfectly complements each other? Should I make all the men physical damage and the women spellcasters?
>>
There's 2 versions of 1.3, the good version and the shitty version. The shitty version which is found at insanedifficulty or the good version which used to be hosted at ffhacktics. Shitty version changes black mages and archers to be bullshit OP classes, removes a lot of the difficulty but punishes grinding too much and in general is a shitty patch. The good version is, however, harder to find, but if you do find it go for easy type (which doesn't make the game easier, it just doesn't make it impossible to beat if you gain more than 1 level per battle).

If you do 1.3 patch, going into the desert replaces Dorter as the first layer of hell, and you don't scramble your way back into sanity once you leave.

Wiegraf can be beaten by Monk Ramza with his squire secondary.

Chakra + move HP up to heal, Yell for when you aren't dead, and keep moving.

On the other hand, it makes the boss battle right after piss easy because A: Monk Ramza OP, and B: You keep all of your buffs/debuffs when it transitions, including the insane speed upping you'll be doing.

Max speed is 50

I didn't realize it as a kid either, then again I sorta ignored the whole plot. Played it years later and I see it all for what it is. Wiegraf even went out of his way to tell the rest of his people not to kidnap and ransom or pull stupid shit but they did anyway. Then people like Ramza who are raised with strict expectations and in an ill informed society end up fucking up people he probably would have sided with.
>sister is kidnapped and with the worst people possible for a long time
>one brother turns into a monster he has to kill
>another brother becomes an undead monstrosity that begs for death
>friends die, people who could have been friends die, his own family disowns him
>his best friends has gone a completely separate path
>the world declares Ramza an enemy
>his entire country is falling apart at every seam
>history writes him off as a lying piece of shit and kills anyone who says otherwise
>fights the devil and her council
>never breaks down and never stops fighting for what he believes is right even if he's never rewarded

Ramza had a hard life. Everyone had a hard life.

I didn't expect such a brutal scene to happen with that music in the background. I also didn't expect Delita to pretty much realize what he had been doing all along and just say "What the fuck did I just do?"
It was a great way to end the game. I'm playing through Tactics Ogre now and I expect great things out of it.

You didn't fuck up Wiegraf, the nobles in power, his own thugs, and then even he somewhat fucked it up.

The nobles for starting this whole mess by turning their backs on them, and the thugs for turning to attacking innocents and giving ruining the image of the entire movement.

Ramza gets involved when they start asking for ransoms and kidnapping small children. Wiegraf is 100% against it and makes it known so very clearly, but he doesn't take strong enough control of his operation and they just keep doing shitty things that makes them all look bad.

This is why I still consider Ramza as one of the greatest FF protagonist in any game. He began the game when he was at around 16 and finished it at around his early 20's, and he never complained, whined or had emo moments. Instead, he got shit done despite everything basically screaming "FUCK YOU RAMZA" at every turn. He just took everything and kept fighting for what he believed in despite his own brothers and everyone else believing that he was a heretical piece of shit that was literally Hitler and the scum of the Earth.
I only wish we could have another protag as based as Ramza in another FF

That battle is literally just a test to see if you have a bait character or a speedy glass cannon. You don't even have to kill them all you need to do is knock one of them into crit to end the fight, but you have to do it before Rafa gets murderized.

>>261636509
I've played 2 on the Ps1, and the Wii one. The PS1 game has partner characters which are pretty useful (although if a monster kills anything, from one of your AI buddies to another monster, they level up instantly), and you can summon more with feathers (which are randomly granted for breaking your equipment, so expect to never get any). Also, if you have a second controller in you can have a friend play the partner character. They can move anywhere on screen before you make your move and attack once/turn (but they can't use the AI's special abilites, like Mog's steal or Shiroma's much needed healing)

The Wii version has extra challenge levels (most of which you have to do to advance the story) and plenty of extra stuff to explore before postgame. Also an entire minigame corner. The only thing I have with it is that you have to go back to re-beat dungeons to get summon stones. The story is also a bit more coherent. ALSO, there's a class system, but don't be fooled the only class you need is white mage for heal, holy, auto-raise, and my personal favorite the ability to charge up extra ability points.

Gameplay-wise, both are pretty good.

One thing I wanna add is that it's a must to save empty bottles in the PS1 game.

You can collect monster essence by killing them with an empty bottle, and that can work wonders when it comes to equipment crafting.

That and teleport tags are the best kicking items. If you have more than one teleport tag you can teleport troublesome enemies away by kicking a spare at them. The item kicking applies for both games.

>when there's level scaling?

The story battles aren't. Only the random free battles are scaled.

>And how am I supposed to get better
Where are you stuck? Chapter 1 is actually the hardest chapter in the game. Specifically, the Dorter Slums with the black mages on the roof and the knight on the ground. That battle is meant to teach the player to not dive balls deep. Sometimes letting the enemies inch toward you (to disadvantageous terrain) is preferable to getting assfucked from the rooftops.
>>
>>261639909
Where are you stuck right now?
Mostly of times it's just leveling and finding out new jobs, a lancer, a ninja and a mage (either black with white magic or summoner with time magic) are a must on your team

Nigger, you're about as dumb as the people who don't use monks because they can't use a sword.

It's pretty good. Its about 10 hours long, and you have to beat it twice to get everything.

For the price, its worth it if you enjoy games by yasmat.

It's not overly long, unless you're looking to fully upgrade your equipment, but maybe 20 hours if you don't rush it. I myself have almost 90 hours logged in, but I've beaten it three times already, and the last one, I was writing down the entire script, which was particularly time consuming because there's small choices in the game, and there's also a New Game+ feature where the game gets harder and every enemy drops new weapons, the chests get refilled, there's more areas to visit, and an alternate ending to unlock. It's more of a traditional RPG though, very different from Matsuno's usual SRPGs or VS/FFT, but it FEELS like an Ivalice game, because he got his old team mostly back together, except Yoshida didn't draw the characters and monsters. And it's like a VN outside of combat, but I'm sure that won't be a negative for you if you're a fan of Matsuno's writing.

I like dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, The Dark Spire, or Grimrock. Is it close to those?
