All the rebuild movies have been shit.
1.0 is just all the parts up to Ramiel with worse direction, cutting out Shinji's flashback and playing the whole first fight straight through was so much worse.
2.0, while definitely improving in someways on the middle part of the series, as in the original Asuka jumps in and the series turns MOTW for a while. However it just sweeps all character problems under the rug, hell Asuka does it in one phone call while stripping. Mari sweeps Kaji under the rug.
3.0, while it tried to be DARK AND DEPRESSING, had no build up to be that way. The only good thing you could say is that Anno at least tried to make it a little less cheery. It was the prettiest out of all of them however.
4.0 is either gonna be the greatest shit ever or its gonna have fucking Dubstep Komm Susser Todd.

That was the Human Instrumentality Project. Notice that this also happened to characters like Asuka and Misato. Everyone's souls were together, "completing" the flaws of each other during Third Impact in EoE. This was SEELE's plan, to fill in the missing pieces of the soul, and it WORKED.
