You heard wrong. At1 is somewhat mediocre but the story picks up massively after the first phase. At2 is considered the best of the series, but NISA's translation was bullshit, so wait for the retranslation if you're gonna play it. At3 is considered the weakest but still has solid music.

I went and replayed At1 over the last few weeks in advance of it, so if you do play it, I'll just advise you to not try to do or get everything; it'll stretch things out and draw you away from the story. Also get the undub; it was a dual-audio release but NISA cut out a heap of the voice acting to add in their dub. Which is shit, of course.
