They were too fucking hard jesus christ.

There's difficult, and then there's shit like Commandos and the later levels in Desperados.
Also Desperados 2 was shit.

Commandos was turned in to a FPS for a wider audience and failed miserably.

Not sure what happened to Desperados.

It's a damn shame, i loved these kinds of games.

Desperados 2 wasn't that bad. Sure, 3D sucked, but you could still play from top-down perspective. It had less features, admittedly

Just in case someone doesn't know Heldorados is sequel to desperados. Its similar to desperados 2, but better.

Back in the day you had kids playing RPG and turn based strategies / RTS games. Now it's WoW and LoL/DotA hand holding and minimal effort games AT BEST. RPG games are now gay romance simulators. Turn based games are non existant outside indie and Japan. RTS is dead as a genre.

Just because the focus is around one unit doesn't make it inferior, you just like classic RTS and don't have the testicles to realize the difference between that and a competitive moba.

I got the demo disc of Desperados in a box of cereal when I was super young. I played it for hours despite never lasting more than 5 minutes.

Same thing that happened to other niche genres. The combination of conservative developer strategies, mainstream audience and consoles being unfit for complex gameplay on account of controllers and miniscule amounts of ram lead to a shit ton of variety in games vanishing around the turn of the millennium.

It's a lot easier. Follows the story of Robin Hood.
Story missions are pretty similar to Desperados but there are also smaller missions like saving people, robbing stagecoaches and defending the forest.

You have your own camp in the forest, you train your men, craft stuff you can use in missions and choose your next objective.
>>
There´s a Robin Hood game that´s like Desperados and Commandos on drugs

I'm so fucking pissed that there aren't any games like them anymore. But maybe it's better that way, they had a good run and now they rest in piece. I'm just sad that Commandos got raped by the FPS reboot, holy shit was I mad, even Commandos 3 was pretty lackluster in length compared to its predecessors.

Also Desperados 2 and Helldorado, or whateveer the fuck they called it was utter shit, fuck 3D.

I said it before and I'll say it again, you will never be able to make 3D as beautiful and charming as hand painted scenery, no matter what level of realism you achieve with 3D.

did commandos have limited ammo for guns? desperados gives you unlimited ammo and wild west setting supports a more "shooty" approach as opposed to ALARM ALARM immediately alerting the entire map to your presence and other things present in a WW2 game.
>>
>>260321758
I don't know, Commandos is pretty tough unless you save regularly, though I guess it has more to do with the length of the missions than anything.
>>
>>260321498
they weren't adaptable to gamepads and didn't have enough of an audience to justify modern day development costs.
>>
>>260330586
Ammo were also unlimited in Commandos.

Also shooting guns in Desperados alert half the map most of the time.

Yes you can go all shooty easier in Desperados, but stealth is much more fun.

World War II-themed FPSs were ridiculously popular back then. They probably just thought that, since Commandos was already a relatively famous franchise, they could half-ass an FPS spin-off and people would buy it anyway.

It's sad, really; Pyro Studios never managed to recover from that blunder. Last time I checked, they renamed themselves as "Pyro Mobile" and are centered on facebook and mobile phone games.

I played many games even then and commandos is too hard. by design the most effective tactic is too savescum like fuck and see what sticks and what doesn't. and then there'll be tight spots that you'll be able to get out of by spamming the handgun after you've reloaded the game ten times. it's doable but it's too weirdly paced
it'd be better if you could still finish levels even after a guy died. or a limited rewind feature. or save spots.

the only reason we got x-com enemy unknown was because everybody screaming about the FPS version, even if it was a different game desing it DIDN'T had to be a dumbed down design, they could add a lot of interesting things but rather they prefeer to spend all the money in those "cinematic" shots

>What happened to games like Commandos and Desperados?

They were just clunky action games and not much else. Basically the Lost Vikings in a isometric view. There not tactical in the slightest. Because it's own design pigeon holed it forever.

They are a blast to play in coop though. Which unfortunately Desperados didn't have for some reason.

This game was ridiculously good when you think about it. It didn't cut corners or mess about. It even had multiplayer!

Did anyone else LAN party this with a bro and have fun doing sync knife kills with one of you as diver and one as green beret?

>GB slits throat of nearest guard.

Also this worked well in missions where one played the sniper and you'd call out who you can't sneak kill and your buddy just blows his head off for you.

Tried to with a buddy but the tank never came in the first mission. It was still fun though because my friend never played a Commandos game and I hadn't played C2 yet at the time so we did stupid shit like gunning the enemies instead of silently taking them down.

also it lacks co-op

The Soldiers series have plenty of stealth-focused maps and they come pretty close to Commandos. A Commandos where you can steal a tank and wreck shit.

What's wrong about them? It's clunky if you use the UI for everything but that's why there are keyboard shortcuts.

You can't rebind them and for some reason half the gun shortcuts are on the other side of the keyboard.

what i appreciate with a game like commandos, especially compared to today, is that it treats you with enough respect to allow you to fail. To allow you to be frustrated. To be an actual challenge that you must rise above and conquer. To offer an actual feeling of accomplishment instead of merely completion.

And today in gaming i see the same analogue in society: rewarding mediocrity. Instead of creating challenges to rise above that create a sense of self-worth and accomplishment, the bar is lowered to the point it can be stepped over...by everyone.

>>260321663
The only missions I had trouble with in Desperados were the one you couldn't kill anyone or raise any alarm and the last one. Commandos has always been the bane of my existence though.

The Robin Hood game was my favourite, wasn't terribly hard but wasn't totally easy, trying to do later levels on hard without kills was a bitch. Also had a lot of cool little touches like the reputation system and being able to do sidequests like robbing carriages and freeing prisoners. Shame it's pretty much impossible to run on today's computers.
