Why is sports vidya so frown upon and hated in /v/?
A lot of /v/ isn't interested in sports to begin with, and sports games tend to be almost entirely the same from one iteration to the next.
Plus, it's a video game for something you could easily go out and do.

Because it hasn't been worth playing for a decade. They just rehash the last game, add a miniscule feature, update the roster, and shove it out the door with a $60 price tag. There are no arcade sports games anymore that people who don't like sports will enjoy (RIP in peace EA Big).

If anyone who doesn't really play sports wants to get into sports games, I suggest either MLB The Show or NBA 2K, depending on your tastes. Either usually put out a good game. I like the NHL series and might get it this year on the PS4 but heard they butchered it because it's the first NHL game on a next-gen platform.

NFL 2K5 did and blew Madden out of the water.
For example, at the time the Cincinnati Bengals had just changed what their uniforms looked like. ESPN 2K5 had the new uniforms while that year's Madden used shitty-looking jerseys obviously made in the create-a-player editor that looked nothing like the new uniforms, yet weren't the old ones.
EA got butthurt that another company did Madden better than they did Madden, so they shut out all competition.
