The premise is so ridiculous that I couldn't get immersed. Like what, some greasy pizza join has robots with AI and strength necessary to overpower a grown man and stuff him in a suit? All while being unable to provide sufficient power to keep a door closed (what the fuck how does that even work)?

People like it because it's a very simple concept that's fun and spooky. The jumpscares are there as a punishment for failure. The ambiguous and simple nature of the game leads to a lot of discussions about everyone's individual experiences.
Adding personalities to the characters is just a fun side things people do I guess.

You are a massive poorfag, so you get this gig working as a security guard durring the graveyard shift. Your job is to watch the cameras to keep an eye on the building as well as the animatronic figures. Turns out these animatronic figures are 2spooky4u and apparently try to get to you throughout each night, forcing you to use your shitty resource management skills in combination with your cameras, lights and doors in a sorry attempt to cover your ass.

As the week progresses, the animatronic figures get more and more active / aggressive. They really seem to want to get to you. If you're caught, you are allegedly stuffed into another animatronic figure somewhat violently.
If you manage to survive all of the nights, you receive a paycheque of around ~$120.50 USD.
That's just around ~$4.00 USD per hour. Good fucking job.

The animatronic figures trying to kill you are the missing children written about in the posters and newspapers. After the children where led back stage by a mysterious man and never seen again, customers complained about a foul odour coming from the figures, as well as allged sightings of blood and mucus around the eyes and mouths. It is likely that the man who lead the children backstage and killed them (probably by stuffing them into said animatronic figures) was also a security guard, which would explain why these figures want your ass dead, stuffing you into an animatronic figure as revenge. The figures are possessed by the souls of the missing children.
