The face burning comes from Paz blowing up since his face is clean before that. After Paz blows up the heli starts spinning right away and the supposed crash occurs. But that's a herring, the helicopter will miss them.

It felt like every engagement happened at such a long range that using a pistol with shitty aim was useless. Getting closer wasn't really an option as to get closer you would have to move forward, an option you can't really get away with without neutralizing some guards, which was hard as fuck to do with just your shitty pistol. What was I missing?

The scenario I was thinking of was with the fence at the beginning of the main mission, where you had to take out the light or the guard manning it, but there was also a patrol walking around the dirt path who would spot you if you tried to get close enough to actually shoot the guard on the light. It was tough as fuck because you couldn't flank either of them, and to actually get close enough to the guard post to shoot him required you to snipe the head of the (possibly multiple) patrolling guard(s), which you couldn't fucking do because of the fence. It was difficult.

You take out the guard on the tower by climbing up the rock ledge to the right of the tower and flanking him. Then you drop down from the ledge into the base, bypassing the fence, and take out the other two guards from behind.
There's so many ways to approach each individual guard in GZ, let alone the actual objectives.
