They are fun games, but roguelike they are not. Roguelike is a genre doesn't mean that all roguelikes are good or bad.

Still don't get why so many people fuck up what is and isn't a roguelike and/or force the term on games like it's some sort of seal of approval.
>>
>>259486660
OP linked a real rogue-like, and was asking for real roguelikes

Surprised nobody has said these:

Old-School: Roguelikes
Rogue
Nethack / Sporkhack
Moria
Slash'em
Castle of the Winds
Shiren the Wanderer (Remade for DS)

New-School but traditional-style rougelikes:
IVAN
Elona
DooM RL (DooM-inspired rougelike)
Chocobo's Dungeon
Azure Dreams (pokemon: the rougelike + dating sim)
Dungeons of Dreadmor
Sword of the Stars: The Pit

Games that are not in the rougelike genre, but are inspired by the genre (procedural generation, permadeath, unforgiving gameplay, minimal tutorialization, etc.)
The Binding of Isaac (Zelda 1 + rougelike)
Spelunky (Platformer + Roguelike)
FTL: Faster Than Light (Space battle management)
Don't Starve (Minecraft + Roguelike)
Risk of Rain (Platformer with guns + rougelike)
Crypt of the Necrodancer (Rythm game + rougelike)

Well, Rogue is quite a lot like Rogue. It's hard to tell the difference actually.

Angband.

Just FYI last time I played Maj'Eyal (after the official release) it was still completely fucked. The difficulty curve is like a cliff. There's this undead boss guy before you can get to the eastern continent who is literally impossible to beat, even with save scumming. I would not recommend this game.

Cataclysm DDA. Zombie hellhole, lots of game world settings to fuck with.

do you even know what a genre is

Wait. I think I played this game before. HOLY SHIT I FINALLY FOUND IT, I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS GAME FOR YEARS, BUT I WAS TOO STUPID TO REMEMBER THE NAME AND GENRE SO IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO ASK ABOUT IT ON "trying to find [game] but can't remember the name" THREADS. THANK YOU ANON I LOVE YOU. NO HOMO
>>
>>259487221
Roguelike has no official term, for me the game just has to keep the spirit of rogue. Your arbitrary definition isn't the same as someone else's.
>>
>>259485639
The granddaddy of them all: Dwarf Fortress
I'm lazy and play with a graphics set.

It's great once you get passed the first eight hour learning curve.

Thats for fortress mode, adventure mode only has a 1-2 hour learning curve
>>
>>259491421
as much as I like DF it's not a roguelike.
well adventure mode is roguelike, but not fortress mode which is what everyone means when people say dorf ortress.
>>
>>259491729
I have read about the game and I'm interested solely in playing the adventurer
Is playing as the adventurer fun, or is the dwarf the main aspect of the game?
>>
>>259491030
Anytime. I remember my dad bought it for me from a bargain bin when I was a kid. Took forever for me to finally beat it.

Fuck snakes and poison man.
>>
>>259492103
Fortress was the original intended mode but to be honest more people are playing Adventure now.
>>
>>259485639
Rogue is pretty Roguelike.
>>
>>259492103
Fortress mode is the main aspect but adventure mode is still fun. I have yet to play another roguelike that can match dwarf fortresses' depth as far as combat goes. You can hack a guy's arm off by specifically targeting his upper arm then reanimate it as a zombie arm and have it strangle him to death.
>>
Maidensnow Eve
>>
>>259493763
Iter Vehemens ad Necem (meaning violent way to death; better known as IVAN)?
>>
>>259492521
What, no.

Adventurer was the original intended mode.
Dwarf Fortress is a sequel to Toady's Slaves to Armok project, which was an rpg. Fortress mode was introduced to get players to design dungeons for exploring.

Fort mode got super popular and it dominated development until the last 2 major releases.

Vagante!

It's a great little game that recently got an update.

Now you can even hot seat co op with friends.

It's shaping up to be a great game and right now it's free.

Also don't forget this not so well known gem.

Tower climb!

It's a do or die one step over the edge risk and reward type game.

You continually learn new techniques and secrets much like spelunky. A little farther each time.
>>
>>259497031

What's wrong with Vagante? I've been putting time into it and it's worthwhile.

What was your suggestion for a rogue-like?
>>
>>259489889

>>
>>259491030

Such a good game, played the piss out of it.

I made my own "classes" with self imposed restrictions (like no magic, only certain equipment) and it was a blast.

Even better since the game used icons as it's graphics (windows icons) I got a icon editor and made custom sprites for each monster (made ants much bulkier looking, made the player wear some cool gear)

>Dwarf Fortress
>Ultima Ratio Regum http://www.ultimaratioregum.co.uk/game/
>Elona
>Stone Soup
>Crypt of the Necrodancer

All games listed meet all requirements of a roguelike and are not rogue-lites. The first two are works in progress but are exceedingly interesting.
>>
>>259487665
crypt of the necrodancer is a full roguelike, it has timed turns and when playing as the bard the turns are untimed like a traditional roguelike.

Its less of a rhythm game than you have to execute your chosen action in cadence with the beat. A rhythm game usually forces you to make specific moves.
>>
>>259485639

Slash 'EM or Sporkhack, along with Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Crawl, if you feel like a bad enough dude to compete in the big leagues.

Alternatively, if you want a more chill experience, the other fellows suggesting Dungeons of Dredmore aren't wrong, and Elona+ has its own charm to it once you get beyond the fact that it's only half translated and quirky as heck.

UnReal+World[1].jpg

I really like Unreal World, I also agree with what people have to say in that literally the only thing in that game is "objective: survive".

There is no real endgame except death, and there aren't any quests or such. Although I think the creators are working towards putting a quest system in.

Pic related, but from an older version.
>>
ToME is the most enjoyable one for me so far
but I also love Stone Soup
>>
>>259498026
They both have their pros and cons

While pre-made dungeons will not have the same tests and surprises that random dungeons do, beating them is mostly just memorizing the dungeon and preparing ahead of time

Randomized dungeons are a better test of your skill and general knowledge of the game. You gotta be able to adapt on the fly
>>
>>259491252
Tf2 is a roguelike
>>
>>259501139
It really depends on the depth of the game and quality of the randomization.

Plus handmade dungeons tend to have more interesting puzzles and once you've seen all the pieces that make up a randomized dungeon its not much different from a static one.
