It has actually been such a long time since I played an RTS that the AI beat me the first time I booted it.
I focused on economy too much and it captured the artifacts and I couldnt fight my way to the temple in time.

I've been playing Men of War Assault Squad with the Neverending Battles mod and it rules
Is MoW: AS 2 worth buying? A lot of the steam reviews say it's just the same game

It is a really different experience to start in one of the later ages. I also especially like playing in the Industrial Age and preventing further age advancement. I usually just pass through the Industrial Age on my way to the Modern Age without really doing much, but it is a really cool age to be in.

The Enlightenment Age is also really cool. If I have a gripe with this game it is the inequality with faction bonuses and unique units. They were very generous to some nations, such as the Germans and Russians, while Jewing nations like the Greeks. I still have no idea how they decided it would be a good idea to give the Bantu A-10s and a massive population bonus.

Other than that, the game is basically perfect and a serious contender for bumping AoE2 of the greatest RTS of all time pedestal.

Probably one of the coziest games I've ever played. It has also held up incredibly well graphics-wise.

Resonaly certain the AI doesn't cheat on tough. Only difference between moderate and tough is that the AI is gimped in terms of playstyle. Tougher is where it starts getting resource bonuses.
Personally I kinda like the Turks, not really all that high on the nation tier list, but that bonus arty range can be real fun to play with.

There is nothing as sweet as getting Aircraft carriers in RoN while your opponents are still in the Enlightenment Age or earlier. Carriers are probably the best units in the game. They can turn the tide of battle in a couple of seconds.

You know what's interesting? I saw the metascores of the HD remakes of Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology on Steam. Both were really low I wondered what the fuck happened
Age of Mythology was fucking panned not because of the remake itself but it seemed they were complaining about the gameplay not being as good as Empires 2 and for the actual mythological aspects being "garbage"
Age of Empires 2 got bad reviews because it didn't actually "change the gameplay in any way"

Age of Empires 2 HD (the steam version) has latency problems, even in single player. There is input lag.
And if you shift queue actions they dont act as expected.
Like having your scout visit several points on the map, you shift click there and you expect him to move out.
In reality, he will not, as he wont do anything until you issue a regular, non-shift command.
You shift queue the points you want him to visit, then right click somewhere else to send him there and he goes there, then he continues with the shift queued path.
A different issue with shift queuing buildings, the shift part doesnt work and the builder will just stop working on the first one and go to the second.

Another issue is the increased unit counts don't really work. If you try a 2v2 game with a 500 cap it turns into a 1 fps slideshow at about 300 per player.
I got it because I wanted to do some coop games with a friend with insane map and unit count sizes but it just doesn't work.

It was one of my favorite multiplayer RTS games. I fucking loved Massive's UI and units having dynamic LOS, though personally would have preferred the Ground Control approach of having only a limited number of units you had to make do with for the whole game. At least it wasn't as bad as Ground Control 2 as long as some retard didn't think heavy artillery was actually useful.

Kinda, I'm not sure if they fucked something up or if it's just going over 200 that messes with thing. We tried 2v2 against the AI and any time it got close to 300 you could feel it, map size seems to have zero effect, just the unit count.
250 would probably be ok in a 4 player setting, anything more than that would get hairy.

To be honest BR's main fault was getting released in that awkward period when WC3 utterly dominated the scene and overshadowed everything else. I would say Armies of Exigo is a much more closer take on WC3 which also got overlooked.

THIS for fucks sake. Nothing triggers my autism quite like it. Much as I love Civ IV and V I can't play either without the diverse unit mods. Is it really that fucking hard to spend a little more time on the sort of fluff that makes your game look more professional and better put together?
My all-time least favourite example of this is the Indians getting stuck with the East Asian tilesets in IV and V.
Just to prove your example about RoN it's the only game I can think of where the Persians/Indians get their own architecture.

Why are so many RTS about micro hell and actions per minute more than actual strategy?
Only RTS I've properly enjoyed in multiplayer was RUSE because it was more about unit positioning and area affecting abilities. In stuff like Warcraft, Red Alert 3, Wargame or CoH I constantly got wrecked due to not being able to change stances and activate abilities quick enough and the same was true for my friends when we tried out AoE2 multiplayer together. It always seems to be about the fastest clicker winning.
Whining aside best single player RTS campaign coming through.

my favourite RTS is Medieval 2 Total war, simply because of the voice acting
Like, clicking on an unit and being told "You are not mein kaiser" or "You are neither friend nor foe" makes me instantly forget any flaw the game could ever have
