Do you /v/irulents prefer steampunk or cyberpunk in your games?
>>
I prefer the game to have subtle influences of either, but not be designed as a whole cliche fest.

That said, cyberpunk is more to my liking.

I'm looking forward to Codename STEAM though.
>>
I think steampunk offers a more compelling setting all around. But I personally love me some cyberpunk.
>>
steampunk is for anime neckbeards. Cyberpunk is what the future will actually look like.

How about both?
>>
I like cyberpunk more personally since it comes with some societal conflicts typically.

Steampunk is nice to look at, but typically doesn't offer much more than, "People are posh and fancy."

Cyberpunk typically comes with tons of rebellion, questionable augmentations, grungy streets, crazy underground black markets, and other stuff that provides for more interesting narratives.

If we were to talk about simply which we like appearance-wise then I'd still probably say cyberpunk. It's always more interesting to see what a clash of future punk can create. Steampunk always just seems to be the same technology the world has, but more complicated and filled with steam/gears. It's always this very "normal" technology like guns or trains but done up in this insanely stupid fashion that makes you wonder how it is efficient. Cyberpunk allows for crazy technology to wonder how it even works.
>>
>>258435164
I really like cyberpunk.
I dont dislike steampunk but I think its pretty limited in terms of world building.
>>
>steampunk
>literally just a silly aesthetic. Doesn't have any thematic elements. Isn't practical in real life.

>Cyberpunk
>Has a wide range of aesthetics, but always has distopian and noir thematic elements. A product of the postmodern age and fear of the future. The future is very likely to look something like this
>>

Space outlaws. Space military good too.

>>258435907
Steampunk used to be good before it got bastardized by lazy people.
>>
Steampunk can be cool but it's application usually results in some SyFy channel original movie shit. Cyberpunk is great for video games.

I love both, but for different reasons.

Cyberpunk:
>Dystopia
>Depravity
>Logical speculations on how things could be

Steampunk:
>Optimism
>Intrigue
>Ingenuity
>Alternate interpretations to how things could have been

That being said, there is a severe lack of quality steampunk games. I'd like to see more of that, solely because it seems like a more difficult medium to actually pull off without being overly contrived. Which ultimately is the problem with steampunk as a whole, because you have to be clever in its application as opposed to cyberpunk, in which technology can be used as a catch-all for anything that has the slightest thematic incongruity.

I prefer clockwork over steampunk.

For games, cyberpunk tends to have better games than steampunk. A lot of cyberpunk is about the setting, while a lot of steampunk is about the aesthetics. While steampunk can be interesting to look at, cyberpunk can be interesting to interact with.

It seams like the majority of people who use steampunk aesthetics don't even know how the technology behind steam works which is what's interesting about steam technology in the first fucking place. You establish a society that has mastered the art of steam engineering to the point where using an alternative source of energy would be pointless. The entire idea of steam punk is based on "retro-futuristic" where artists of the time period drew what they thought future tech looked like.

It was interesting to see all the shit they came up with, including inventions that actually happened but with staunch differences

For example, a lot of early 19th interpretations are incredibly stylistic and garnished with engravings and other details accustom to quality products of the era (Like how that league of extraordinary gentlemen movie made the Nautilus, a hypothetical submarine look like a damn temple with garnishments both inside and outside of the vessel).

Or like how post industrial era interpretation of space ships and flying cares all looked like chrom covered buggies that oozed with the style of automobiles at the time.

Steam punk is simply the an idea that the British industrial revolution never stopped and for whatever reason electricity was never discovered, so automaton shit just advanced.

Fossil fuels, nuclear energy, solar energy... All the electricity is generated by using the heat to turn water into steam and run the steam towards turbines, that generate electricity.
In the future we will still use steam in power plants.

That doesn't necessarily have to be the case, though. The 19th Century was a time of huge social change, and there's a whole slew of issues you can dig into there, like industrialization, racism, classism, nationalism and religion vs secularism. Arcanum does a pretty handy job of that, but the social conflicts aren't at the forefront. I think it's a testament to the shallowness of steampunk authors/artists that they make such an interesting time in history so fucking boring.

I think that's what frustrates me so much about steampunk, and its lack of authenticity. I'm a total history nerd for the history of the past 150~ years, that whole era is infinitely interesting to me. There's so much shit that can be covered there, plots and conflicts can be basically spoonfed to steampunk authors/artists.

Instead, we just hear about the aesthetics and don't actually dip into what makes that very world seem alive.

Why does steam punk use gears when pistons and valves are more related to steam powered shit.

Cogs would be clockwork things, Automatons and such that are powered through being wound up.

Cyberpunk has purpose, steampunk is just for appearances sake. For the most shallow hipster babies imagianble.

Cyberpunk, if only because it seems to have an identity. Every other -punk just seem to be pulp with some window dressing.

Nah, Seapunk is more of an offshoot of Vaporwave so bioshock would need some early internet/old graphics and vapid color aesthetic. Seapunk/vaporwave is more of a romanticized image of the early internet aethetics, they don't have anything to do with a certain image or theme other than the general look.
>>
>>258446331

E.Y.E is cyber punk with I guess neo-gothic elements or something like that

The tech is advanced, it's just the armor is designed to look knight armor and and samurai shit.

It's one of those weird stylistic choices that scramble up the sub-genre, Like how Chronicals of Riddick featured the Necomongers and their gothic church like ships that were covered with Renaissance looking statues and such.

Like the fashion style of the 5th elements?

It doesn't really make sense.

It was going to have that and more until Ken stumbled upon Quantum physics and made them erase EVERYTHING.

Steampunk. I simply feel as if it hasn't been explored enough. I would love to see an open world game bassed around it. It's a shame that The Order is looking to be shit. I really like that setting but that won't get me to buy a game that just looks horrible.

Vaporware is just a music genre that also flaunts an image that goes with the song and falls under the idea that it's futuristic elevator music.

Steampunk is shit. The only good thing to come out of it was the Difference Engine. That's it. The vast majority of Steampunks fanbase and even the people who create Steampunk media are obsessed with the exagerrated visual nature of it and nothing else. It's all style and no substance.

Nah, Vaporawave tries very thinly to pass itself off as anti-capitalistic neo 80s shit while simultaneously embracing it, it also has this imagery set that sort of mocks those 80s/early internet aesthetics. Seapunk is just a fashion style that recently has tried to become it's own thing actual thing.

I had an idea for a steampunk story about a janitor who has to hose down the analytical engine after some idiot gets their hand caught in it but it never really went anywhere.

I just thought about how in steampunk it's always about Sir this or Esquire that and nobody ever addresses the filthy underclasses who would still have shitty lives while the nobles take their dirigible to the clockwork horse races.
>>
>>258451450
I can dig it. What if while cleaning it out he stumbles across some secret conspiracy to further enslave the masses using the analytical machine?

>>
>>258451690
That sorta runs counter to the point the story would make, namely that no matter how cool and awesome it is for the upper crust the little people still get shit on constantly.

Even today it sucks to be poor, but at least contemporary poorfags have refrigerators and the Internet and such. Being poor in the 19th century was far shittier, and that's something that steampunk seems to just gloss the fuck over in favor of TOP HATS WITH COGS AND GEARS ON THEM BY CRIKEY

near future technology based on current trends and experimental innovations
>steampunk
the same technology we have now but run on outdated, flawed, or inefficient methods.

cyber punk is WAY more interesting.

>cyber punk, what if technology changed the world as we know it
>steam punk, what if technology ran on steam

its not even a fuckin contest.steampunks one redeeming quality is its ability to integrate magic somewhat convincingly and thetouch of victorian designs that has pretty much dominated the setting. then again deus ex HR has shown us that cyber punk itself can also integrate other designs (the Renascence) quite effectively.
>>
I like the setting before cyberpunk. Where corporations haven't quite taken over everything but still have mercs and tremendous power.

I'm actually writing a design document for a game like that. Where different coalitions of companies fight each other. I took some inspiration from the Trade Wars of WoW, and Continuum.

>>258452761

Steam Punk would be a world where the steam engine had a longer run, where somewhere a long the line the men who paved the way for electric power were stopped in their tracks or electricity itself was outlawed.
>>
What would be the tech if Tesla was able to install his free energy coils?
>>
>>258453236
>electricity itself was outlawed.
I don't think thats right. I think they most steampunkfags idolize Tesla.
>>
>>258453180
No, no, no. That's not how it actually happens. Cyberpunk still tends to be cookie-cutter but at least it tries new shit, aesthetically speaking.

Most steampunk is literally "what if modern technology was available back in the day only it ran on steam instead of computers." It's dogshit.
>>
>>258452761
>>steam punk, what if technology ran on steam
That's not how it should be at all, and anyone who writes it like that is a hack. Just substituting the same technology with one covered in gears and brass tubes is utter shite.
It should be what kind of present we would live in if the world still operated entirely on steam and the logical innovations regarding it.
>>
>>258453356

Yet they don't use electricity outside of aesthetic diodes.
>>
For whatever reason Steampunk got big, and it lost its core values and meaning.

that's how hacks do it. I could say the same.
>cyberpunk is just "what if our present technology suddenly could do everything.
>>
>>258453707
Technically the world still does run on steam. Like 90% of all electricity is derived from steam turbines in some fashion, even nuclear power.
>>
>>258453236
the steam engine had a pretty shit run as it is, the engines were a son of a bitch to maintain and their size / weight to power ratio was horrible. you had make massive heavy complicated engines, supply them with coal and water, fuss over their every little problem, and at the end of the day what did you have?
>>
>>258454012
I guess something like Theif or Arcanum, where magic can be used for mundane use like lights and shit
>>
>>258452959
please elaborate, otherwise the conversation is dead until I watch it
>>
>>258454013
The core issue here is that most steampunk authors are in fact fucking hacks.
>>
>>258454012
Anyone can make Xpunk. X being whatever they want. Punk just means a radical change in society usually related to X.

Magepunk would assumed be where magic and mages make an appearance and run the society, changing technology and everything towards magic.
>>
>>258454145
agreed. but it's not the genre's fault.
>>
>>258454183

>>
>>258454057

But see, If we were stuck with shit for a while you'd at least see some improvements with time.

good steam punk should at least try to appear as if people improved upon the steam engine.
>>
>>258454013
Cyberpunk is more corporations using technology to rule the world sending society into a dystopia.
