Do you /v/irulents prefer steampunk or cyberpunk in your games?
I prefer the game to have subtle influences of either, but not be designed as a whole cliche fest.
That said, cyberpunk is more to my liking.
I'm looking forward to Codename STEAM though.
I think steampunk offers a more compelling setting all around. But I personally love me some cyberpunk.

I like cyberpunk more personally since it comes with some societal conflicts typically.
Steampunk is nice to look at, but typically doesn't offer much more than, "People are posh and fancy."
Cyberpunk typically comes with tons of rebellion, questionable augmentations, grungy streets, crazy underground black markets, and other stuff that provides for more interesting narratives.
If we were to talk about simply which we like appearance-wise then I'd still probably say cyberpunk. It's always more interesting to see what a clash of future punk can create. Steampunk always just seems to be the same technology the world has, but more complicated and filled with steam/gears. It's always this very "normal" technology like guns or trains but done up in this insanely stupid fashion that makes you wonder how it is efficient. Cyberpunk allows for crazy technology to wonder how it even works.

The entire idea of steam punk is based on "retro-futuristic" where artists of the time period drew what they thought future tech looked like.
It was interesting to see all the shit they came up with, including inventions that actually happened but with staunch differences
For example, a lot of early 19th interpretations are incredibly stylistic and garnished with engravings and other details accustom to quality products of the era (Like how that league of extraordinary gentlemen movie made the Nautilus, a hypothetical submarine look like a damn temple with garnishments both inside and outside of the vessel).
Or like how post industrial era interpretation of space ships and flying cares all looked like chrom covered buggies that oozed with the style of automobiles at the time.
Steam punk is simply the an idea that the British industrial revolution never stopped and for whatever reason electricity was never discovered, so automaton shit just advanced.

That doesn't necessarily have to be the case, though. The 19th Century was a time of huge social change, and there's a whole slew of issues you can dig into there, like industrialization, racism, classism, nationalism and religion vs secularism. Arcanum does a pretty handy job of that, but the social conflicts aren't at the forefront. I think it's a testament to the shallowness of steampunk authors/artists that they make such an interesting time in history so fucking boring.

I think that's what frustrates me so much about steampunk, and its lack of authenticity. I'm a total history nerd for the history of the past 150~ years, that whole era is infinitely interesting to me. There's so much shit that can be covered there, plots and conflicts can be basically spoonfed to steampunk authors/artists.

I had an idea for a steampunk story about a janitor who has to hose down the analytical engine after some idiot gets their hand caught in it but it never really went anywhere.
I just thought about how in steampunk it's always about Sir this or Esquire that and nobody ever addresses the filthy underclasses who would still have shitty lives while the nobles take their dirigible to the clockwork horse races.

That sorta runs counter to the point the story would make, namely that no matter how cool and awesome it is for the upper crust the little people still get shit on constantly.
Even today it sucks to be poor, but at least contemporary poorfags have refrigerators and the Internet and such. Being poor in the 19th century was far shittier, and that's something that steampunk seems to just gloss the fuck over in favor of TOP HATS WITH COGS AND GEARS ON THEM BY CRIKEY

its not even a fuckin contest.steampunks one redeeming quality is its ability to integrate magic somewhat convincingly and thetouch of victorian designs that has pretty much dominated the setting. then again deus ex HR has shown us that cyber punk itself can also integrate other designs (the Renascence) quite effectively.
I like the setting before cyberpunk. Where corporations haven't quite taken over everything but still have mercs and tremendous power.
I'm actually writing a design document for a game like that. Where different coalitions of companies fight each other. I took some inspiration from the Trade Wars of WoW, and Continuum.
