The brain is just a regulator for those cables, which helps fuel the cells. The mitochondria in our cells, which we cannot exist without, aren't actually a native part of the body. They are a foreign organism, complete with it's own genetic material, which has evolved for millions of years within the cells of animals. Without this foreign bacteria, humanity would not be able to reproduce our DNA.
Funny, in a way. Mammalian life has evolved to be entirely dependent upon ancient bacteria. It is almost as though animals are the perfect host as we feed them, protect them and ensure their chance of procreation.
