You're not taking into consideration the massive boosts it will receive to both Defense and Special Defense or the fact that it can be both Slowbro and Mega Bro. in the episode Lt. Surge pulls a good old American survival of the fittest argument and pressures Ash to evolve Pikachu into Raichu if he wants to win. I don't remember who tells Ash but it's essentially established that pokemon become entirely different pokemon when they evolve and that evolving Pikachu will remove all the adventures they've shared.

That might be a retconn explanation in the current show canon, but originally it was because Ash not wanting Pikachu to be memory wiped.
It was a different time, early pokemon was weird because they had yet to conceptualized how the "world would work". Remember that for the first season it was implied that Pokemon were new to the world and just started turning up (Ash never seeing one in his, advertisements for becoming a pokemon trainer as if something new, ect) and that background animals were way more common. They also had North America and South America as being continents where as now I'm pretty sure they've been retconned as being Unova.
Essentially there was a lot of weird shit thats not around anymore.

The reason they exist is because Pokemon started fading in it's immense popularity by the second gen, at least in america. The copious amounts of advertising and events started to die down and kids stopped caring about it.
I didn't even know about the Gold and Silver until about a year after it's release, no one gave a shit.
Fortunately I got back into 3rd gen and re-discovered a newfound love for the series, but the initial bulk of the first generation did not. The people who cut themselves off by the second gen eventually grew up and started getting nostalgic for the first gen, but felt uncomfortable about the pokemon gens that came out while they stopped caring about the series. So they justified that all the new games were shit as to make an excuse to not play them.
it's pretty pathetic, because often times they pull the whole "you have autism if you still care" argument while still holding on to their game boy colors to play childrens game they believe is special.

You now realize Slowpoke has two evolutions, the happy evolution and the sad evolution.
The Sad evolution, Shellder bites Slowpokés tail, it still becomes sentient bu hostile, so slowly has been eating slowpoke as we can see in it's Mega form that finally reaches it's goal, leaving slowpoke an empty vessel like Parasect.
The happy evolution, Slowpoke's psychic powers grows stronger and kills the Shellder on it's head which becomes nothing but a garment on Slowpoke's headOf course that would have been cool if it wasn't for the small detail that is a King's rock that makes it a Slowking.
I've just finished catching up with the anime and while Hawlucha was already one of my favorite Gen 6 pokémon and a total bro on my first playthrough of Y, that Hawlucha episode easily makes him climb up to my number 1 spot, outclassing Feraligatr who had been there since the early days of gen 2. What a fucking badass. He even has his own theme song.
