I was once in denial, too, but I eventually caved, installed the game, spent six hours a day playing it because it feels fucking right.
Don't think of it as a Brawl mod. Think of it as Melee modded to have better grafics, more items, stages, characters, techniques, and music, and with the ability to further modify it to your heart's content, AND the ability to play with tons of people in your area via netplay, through /v/ or Smashboards.
If you haven't played PM yet you're missing out and you're not hurting anybody but yourself.
Granted Pit and Mewtwo and Diddy seem a bit OP but you're not going to be good enough to notice that before they get rebalanced in the next update.

It's very slightly easier to get into than Melee was, which means you'll get your ass handed to you for a few days as you learn to implement fast-falling, short-hopping, L-Cancelling and dash-dancing, but you'll probably get it down to only losing by one or two stocks after a few weeks.
As for people to play with, it depends on your region. Usually via dolphin netplay you can find hella viable matches during peak hours. I don't know if anyone's worked around the fact that Nintendo took down the servers for Brawl yet.
You can look up "advanced beginner guides" for Melee to help and follow them in P:M. There might be guides like that for P:M, by now.
