I think the issue is that when you have a community like smash that doesn't always get outside support, growing the community becomes important. Very few people are going to want to get in on a community that is hostile to newcommers.

The only "excuse" I gave myself for never being this good was just I essentially had no friends that played it on that "level" and reach those heights, and the few times I did play with someone irl they were terrible and was just for casual fun (which is fun, too). The only "serious" matches I would have would be over wifi people I met, and of course that incorporates lag and other crap. And it wasn't like I played with them nonstop, either. Idk.

Go to tourneys. It's important to play against people your skill level if you ever want to get better at these games. The most you can do by yourself is acquire tech skill, but having a ton of tech and no fighting experience won't get you far in tourneys.
Versus matches help teach the matchups, the stage knowledge, spacing, and mindgames.
I played at my first tournament last weekend. Tied for 13th out of 51 in Melee, 17th out of 48 in PM.

Thanks. I think people are thirsty for tourneys in Washington. It was the first year of the tournament, but the TO was talking about organizing more tournaments as the year goes along. I'm in the midwest for college (and unfortunately I can't make it to Big House 4), but hopefully I can make it to more tournaments. It'd be cool to see metroid again in person.
Also, Peach rep was surprisingly high at the tourney I went to. There must've been at least 4 Peaches other than me that made it far. The Peach ditto was something I wasn't prepared for.
