Technically. The plot is that you're the remnants of the Federation and have to escape the human-supremacist rebel uprising before they catch up to you. The "time limit" is basically how many jumps from station to station you can make before the Rebel "wall" makes it impossible to progress without getting in a hard-to-win fight.

Yes, it was a corridor shooter, but the first one was not much different either- the entire series was. Also, levels had varied length. The mechanics were improved regardless. Classes were more fleshed out and were their most unique in the entire series. If you had feelings on the difficulty, you could always increase it.

The only good part of ME1 was the main story, everything else was mostly copy-pasted shit, and the planet exploration although fun at first, quickly became a, okay I need to go get these things over here.
