I think you're comparing memorable first levels to an unmemorable first level. Orpheon is just where you start the game, but it's not particularly iconic aside from that, just another set of mechanical hallways. In Prime threads people more fondly recall Phendrana Drifts, the Tallon IV jungle, the Metroid Prime crater, etc. Maybe Sakurai assumed it was like those other tutorial stages, but the game didn't really open up until you hit the planet. Not every first level is the automatic best choice to represent a game.

Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong both have their Rate/Retro designs. Also Rayman is getting a trophy, and the kremlings are in game. K. Rool is likely to get a trophy Fighter or not. Dark Samus is an Assist trophy, And there are bound to be a lot of Prime and DKC trophies regardless.

Uhhh... who the hell DOESN'T remember the frigate? It may be the tutorial but it's still a pretty important piece of the game. It sets the entire tone of the game all in the first 20 minutes. Here you are on this derelict vessel and all around you are signs of something gone horribly wrong before you got there. You feel entirely alone because the crew is all dead or close enough to it and all around you are smashed specimen containers, corpses, and escaped parasites already making themselves at home. It's creepy and foreboding and the records left flickering on the monitors give an increasing feeling of intrigue as you explore the and learn pieces of what was going on and figure out what this is leading up to as the game progresses. Then after being attacked by the parasite queen and successfully fighting her off, she falls into the reactor and sends the ship into an unstable self destruct where you need to make a hasty retreat, only to bump into a revived, rebuilt nemesis on the way out.
Seriously, how the fuck did NONE of that level leave any impression on you? The opening act is always one of the most important parts of a game and it obviously had to make SOME impression on you or else you probably wouldn't have bothered to continue and it would be a universally panned segment of the game. I think you're just trying to build some shitty strawman to justify your anger that all of YOUR favorite things aren't making it into a game that's trying to please more people than just YOU.

Choosing generic areas ain't exclusive to those franchises. We're getting like a dozen Mario stages and most of em are grassy hill levels. We're getting a Delphino Plaza reskin of the starting town for the new Zelda stage.
It's pretty clear that, when it comes to stages, Sakurai's more concerned with attempting (usually in vain) to represent the whole game rather than a specific area. So we just get whatever area is most likely to be known from that game, and that usually amounts to dumb stuff from the first five minutes.

Melee's stages weren't really as directly taken from anything as the ones from Brawl and 4. Metroid's and Zelda's stages certainly didn't look like any real area from either game, they were more like rough approximations of what things from those games look like.
DK's Brawl stage was based on an area from a DK game, it's just a shitty stage and it wasn't a Rare game so no one remembers it. I'm sure his Smash 4 stages will be based on things from Returns.
