Pikmin is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth. Mario Kart is set in a completely different universe. Product placement isn't that bad as long as it makes sense and fits well with the setting. The Mercedes DLC does neither of them.

But you did still know what you were getting beforehand. All the DLC courses were remakes of N64 courses, and they told you what level was in what pack, and what bonus characters you'd be getting when they became available.
It's slightly different than "Hey we're making DLC and if you want all of it now give us $30 extra for this shit you don't even know if you'll want"

You could only recruit the other starter pokemon if you bought DLC dungeons that had the other starter pokemon in them. Also DLC dungeons with strong as shit enemies that are all sleeping, so you can take them out easily with ranged attacks and get levels stupid fast.

But the beauty of it is, Its the epitome of optional.
If someone is a casual and wants to get all the characters for no effort then they get penalized by having to spend money. If you actually go through the game as intended youre rewarded with getting things yourself. Everyone wins, the only reason to argue this is if you cant stand the idea of someone enjoying something differently
