I got the collector's edition of this game and found it to be highly, highly disappointing. Simple combat, uninteresting locations, minimalist and generic story. What exactly is the reason people play this game? The Ys games that are already on steam are better in every way.

I don't regret my purchase of the LE edition on Vita since I can support Falcom/XSEED and the box is sweet as hell, quite cheap for an LE even imported.
But at this rate its definitely going for paperweight rather than anything close to a gaming platform.

Probably never, since I imagine Konami owns the script since it was used for the PS2/PSP ports. And Falcom probably doesn't want to spend the time and effort to retranslate it themselves.
If it's any comfort, the version on Pirate Bay has a script that seems largely identical to the PS2 version (though alas, you don't get to hear Scott McNeil straining to do the voice of a five-year-old boy.)

Pretty sure the PS2 sprites WERE 3D models, done for the sake of consistency (since all the backgrounds and bosses were 3D.) And yeah, they looked good. Having played the PS2 version first, it was kinda weird playing the PC one and seeing everyone having big heads.
Don't particularly care about 60fps vs 30, but I'd say the PC version still wins graphically because higher resolution (the character close-ups especially look nicer on PC), but the PS2 version is better overall because of the voices and all the extras.
The PSP version, however, is to be avoided at all costs.
