Holy fuck I've been trying to figure out what this game was for YEARS. All I remember is playing the demo of it once on one of those old PSX demo discs and that it involved setting traps to dudes dudes and you played as a young girl or vampire or something?

You played as a girl who was raised by vampires/blue skinned people. You go around setting traps because people keep coming to attack you and destroy the house. Pretty neat, especially the various traps you unlocked depending on what you bought and how the story had branching paths depending on what you did during the missions.

The sequel (Deception 3) did even more story stuff and took you to a bunch of different castles for the trap-making.

>>
>>257058837
Tecmo's Deception (the first game) was fairly different. You setup traps in the castle before things began, traps cost "money", and they were single-use. You also stood next to the trap to activate it, and held down the button to keep it active. When it was done, you had the option to sell the victim for gold or kill them for their soul.

Rather than a pre-set characters each round, you instead choose who you'd like to attract from classes like merchants, knights, and so on. You also went and customized your castle as the game progress, and unlocked stuff like monsters. I just thought the game was okay, but you might as well check it out.

There are also two more games of the series, both like Deception 2/3 rather than Tecmo's Deception. One is Trapt on the PS2 and the other is the recent Deception 4 on the Vita.

>>
>>257059896
The first Tecmo's Deception is a lot different than the other games in the series, as mentioned >>257060083 You do need to activate the trap manually and then stand next to it to drain their HP. There is a range on the traps, so you can't be too far away to trigger them. I don't fully recall the mechanics, but in general killing characters gave you money for more traps, while taking their souls was generally used for summoning monsters.

I played all the way through this. Only got three of the six really big summons, although I hardly needed them. The only magic I really ever used was healing, and between that and stringing together all the combos, was able to get through the game fully.

My only complaint was that after a few hours, the whole combo system got very old very quickly. Maybe if they kept the list in-game it would've been more bearable, but trying to "find" any combo beyond a length of 4 was just not worth it. The best attacks anyways were just Up, Down, Up, Down, Up, Down, etc. (different for each character) thanks to that stringing together combos most efficiently.

>>
>>257060524
The first game is pretty much entirely different from the rest. It plays almost like a side-game for the others, with somewhat familiar elements but really different gameplay.

I'd say play the rest in order first (2, 3, Trapt, 4) and then give the first a try when finished or bored, to see if you like it. That way, you won't be disappointed with it partway through playing the rest, and won't be disappointed by the others if it turns out you prefer the first over them.

No, it wasn't as good as Mario Kart

Yes, I loved playing it anyways. And given that I had both, that's saying something. I really loved this and Chocobo's Dungeon 2, and was kind of disappointed that Dice de Chocobo never appeared in English.

But it DID keep a list of all your discovered arts in the game. All you had to do with hit triangle when you were doing the inputs and it would bring up the list of discovered arts. Cool your jets hothead, I don't think it's obscure. Whenever it gets brought up, everyone knows about it.

This is because it came with a demo for Final Fantasy VIII, and people shit on it now because VIII was pretty lame, but at the time no one knew that and everyone bought it, and it turned out Brave Fencer Musashi was better than FFVIII demo or even the full game.

One of the characters (Noa, if I recall) had a combo that was just up-down-up, so just making her imput up-down-up-down-up was the best damage she did outside specials. One of the other characters, Vahn I think, had one that was right-down-right or two which linked together in a similar fashion, so you could just keep pounding on everything with him as well.

I seem to recall that Gala wasn't as effective that way, which was disappointing, as Gala was a great party member otherwise. That was okay though, because he still had great magic anyways and could just heal everyone at the end of a round.

It's been awhile since I played the game, though, so I'm probably forgetting some details.

Yeah, Gala had a shorter bar in general so he couldn't make huge combos but he made up for it in raw damage and short specials. It was worth it to give him the accessories that boosted Spirit or whatever it was that increased the bar size. I think Gala had a lot of guard crushing moves too so enemy blocks didn't mean much.
I replayed it about a year and a half ago and it's a lot more fun when you're actually old enough to grasp mechanics and shit. Like, I feel that way about a lot of games really. So much just went over my head when I was younger.

I remember trying a demo once. It was some sort of side scrolling platformer, similar to oddworld in that you mostly avoided traps. The difference is that when you died it was always shown and really gory and would also say the way you got killed like eviscerated, or decapitated.

Maybe it wasnt psx, I though it was on a demo disc for it though.

I'm sure this game isnt real though, its never shown itself again so I could just have a faulty memory.

Radiata stories.

Super advanced for its time in terms of the openness of the world, ability to pick how you want to fight and over 100 characters to recruit to your party.

Plus actually awesome story and decent endgame and replay value with ng+ and another half of main story (at one point about halfway through the game you make a choice to side with one group or another, from that point onward the game is drastically different depending on your choice, everything from your party composition to your main city hub changes, as well as your ending of course)

Funny how Square-soft and Early Square-Enix could be pretty damn good, while modern Square-Enix just sucks, having killed off or made various series mobile only (SaGa, Chrono, World of Mana), while pretty much just localizing Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts in the west anymore (while giving stuff like Dragon Quest the shaft). In addition while they had a good deal of stand alone games in the past (BFM, Threads of Fate, Xenogears, Radiata Stories), they seem to only do them rarely now (like with TWEWY).

>>257067435
Look mang, I know that. The devs are still out there for the most part, but it's just, its a nostalgiafag thing.

Getting home from school to eagerly play the FF4 you rented at blockbuster, getting really stocked that you got FF6 for your birthday. Playing secret of mana, getting in tears because your mom got you a PS1 for your birthday and your grandma got you FF7, then continuing to grow a bit older each year with lotsa squaresoft games to paly along the way. Xenogears, einhander, chocobos dungeon 2, the FF series, threads of fate, parasite eve 1/2, etc.

And they were all made by the same people so it was like some sort of quality seal.

This was all almost twenty years ago. I'm a lot older now, it's just simpler times and missing them I guess.

Okay i'm being a faggot now i'm sorry.
>>
>>257067435
I know that. It's still just kind of sad to see that happen to a company and their series. Especially when out of the various RPG series started in third, fourth, and fifth gen, there's not a huge amount that are still around (others like Wild Arms, Breath of Fire, Koudelka/Shadow Hearts being dead at this point), with some like Dragon Quest that might as well be considered in the west as far as actual releases/localizations go now.

Still surprised it hasn't found it's way to the PSN considering it's a fan favorite as far as the series goes. On that note, apparently someone didn't even care enough to get Wild Arms 2 in the right category there. It's not in the RPG section like the first game, but rather over in the action section instead.

Oh well, not like it's hard to find the third game to begin with, nor is it expensive. ACF, on the other hand...

Is the case for why most PS2 RPGs aren't on the PSN? If so, I guess that might answer why DQ VIII isn't on there either (better than Square-Enix just not giving a fuck, I suppose).

Still, I suppose it hits some games harder than others to not have a PSN release. The first Shadow Hearts is about $50 these days, and Wild Arms ACF ranges from $45-60.

At least Skies of Arcadia got a Gamecube port. But yeah, Sega can be pretty stupid. I mean, they can make and publish good games, but a lot of times they mishandle them through poor marketing or low prints, or don't make eventual ports, or fuck around with the sequels not understanding what made the original so enjoyable (like Valkyria Chronicles 2 compared to the first game), or generally just plain forgetting a franchise exists.

I have heard they actually did a pretty nice job on that Sega Collection on the PS3 and 360 though.
