Daisy is an underdeveloped character whose sole purpose is be another playable girl in Mario Party and Mario Kart's roster. Without any background/character depth to back her up, she's just another character to pass up the time with without any meaning.
Rosalina on the other hand contrasts strongly from Peach/Daisy, debutes in the Mario Galaxy games and aids Mario/Luigi in their quest rather than being a hindrance like how Peach is. She's also strong and independent, qualities lacking in Princess Toadstool Peach, who mostly gets rescued by Mario. Fanbase mostly backs Peach and Daisy purely out of nostalgia and nothing more.
I give credit to Daisy though for being a tomboy, one sadly devoid of depth but she's still better than Peach so

I suspect Nintendo might already be working on a Mario Galaxy game for the Wii U. Mario Galaxy was a successful installment to the Mario franchise, considering how the first game on the Wii sold over 6 million copies in North America and 11 worldwide. Mario Galaxy also got steller reviews for its unique innovative gameplay and presentation. Rosalina was also well-received as a character, despite not being playable in the game series. Sadly though, Rosalina is probably one of the most underrated characters in Mario history although that might change with Smash Bros. And I don't see the comparison with her and Lighting from XIII making any sense considering Final Fantasy XIII was a full-blown disaster with Lightning being a female Cloud Strife while Rosalina is her own character and the Mario Galaxy games were highly praised.

Toadette has only ever been a spinoff thing besides that cameo. I'm pretty sure she's a female Toad but we only ever see the regular male ones in the main games. It's just kinda strange.
