Dragon's Dogma was funny like that. Near the end of the game when the Dragon captured your love interest you could decide to challenge the dragon or go "fuck this shit I'm out". Stepping down was considered a game over but there was a sequence where you could see your love interest look at you in disbelief while you go back to the city and rule as king. The reason why a lot of people intentionally caused a game over was because Dragon's Dogma had a really shitty way of determining your love interest. Essentially any NPC in the game could become one. This meant that as a male character if you completed a huge quest for another male character and his affinity towards you was higher than any other character in the game you basically found out by accident when you initiated the end-fight that your character is apparently gay. It happened to me as well. When I was about to end the game and challenge Gregori the love interest I was supposed to protect was that fucking guy that I did the hidden-notes quest for which gives a huge boost in affinity.
