on a desk a coil is pretty useful, because it coils itself up when you're not very far from the device you're plugged into. I have my coiled cable attached to my ATR-2500 mic and I detach it from the headphones and leave it on my desk when I go to work, and just use the short cable.

I just replaced those after about 2 and a half years of heavy use. The top cushion's cover will begin to degrade after about 2 years and the little zip-lock type thing they use to secure the pad to the headset will wear out after about a year. Other than that, good headset.

Anything that has a good soundstage in general. There's a reason the ATH-700 is renowned as one of the best headphones for gaming. It doesn't sound too good quality wise, but for pure soundstaging there are few that can beat it (HD800 being one of them).
