Days was more of a focused story. Yeah, it was still actually quite important to the main story, but on its own it still told a really great story, albeit incredibly fucking tragic.
That's kind of what I like about the KH series. They treat it like a series, so they're not afraid of making some of the games tragedies because you know the story isn't over. Both Days and Birth by Sleep end in horrendously negative notes where everyone who tried to do anything "good" or "right" essentially got fucked over by their own good will. And that breaks up the monotony of every story having good endings all the time.

I disagree. None of the events from Days actually affect the games that are not Days. All of the most important parts of the Days story were already in KHII/FM. The Xion part of everything was self-contained and its only outreaching plot point is having Xion be inside of Sora as yet another person that needs saving.
While it wasn't necessary per se, Re:coded's story actually revealed to the characters in-universe the bond that Sora has to TAV, and that they can be saved. While we certainly know that as the audience, the characters didn't. And this feeds directly into why Mickey wrote that letter which was why Sora and Riku took their Mark of Mastery in 3D.

Honestly it takes a lot of paying attention to know what the fuck is going on in Days and why it's happening. You pretty much have to play it after playing all the other games to figure out what the hell is going on.
I played Days as my first KH and hated it, then i played the rest and went back to it and it's one of my favorites. But the fact that the actual events of the story are obscured so much is definitely not a point in its favor.
But as for coded, I thought the pacing was almost worse. Literally nothing at all happens for the first like 6 worlds. You just go into these random datascapes just cause. The story is basically

She looked different based on your memories and connection to Sora. Braig saw Ventus, Axel saw Naminé at first, Saïx saw nothing, etc.
Roxas saw her as having her own face because he didn't have any memories of Sora, and their friendship made that face, and identity, real. Naminé does some exposition about how she'd gained her own face at some point.

Trust me, I know more than most about what's going on in KH. I've played every game multiple times, read all the supplemental materails and have revisited Days multiple times with that knowledge that brings.
I'm very confident in how little its story matters to the rest of the franchise. And what DID matter, the outreaching threads like Xemnas' search for the Chamber of Awakening (which was also in KHII anyway), or Axel and Saïx's plotting, were swept under the rug and almost completely ignored in favor of ice cream and existential musings that served no purpose and are a chore to read/watch.

Also a lot of the events besides that seem incredibly fucking random, but they're actually reactions to events that are happening at the same time. The game's timeline starts halfway through KH1 and extends through chain of memories until the beginning of KH2, so it's all very confusing.
Everything that happens in the game, even the smaller details, all have a purpose. That in itself is genius, but the fact that it takes like 3 playthroughs of all the games and some reading on the wiki to understand what's going on shows that they take the obscurity and subtlety a bit too far.

This has, honestly and truly, been teased since Chain of Memories. Days was a little more heavy handed with it, but it is by no means the sole source of speculation.
Like I said, the events of Days are more supplementary material rather than actual plot progression. Everything important in Days was already established in KHII. So borrowing the items from KHII for a later game placed before the events of KHII doesn't, to me, make it a progression of the plot.
The only way that would work is if you played Days.

I guess we just have different priorities in looking for a game. I thought Days was actually pretty awesome and had some of the best hidden callbacks and call forwards to the rest of the series, which to me makes it feel a lot more connected to the rest of the series in a way. I dont like how Xion just disappeared off the face of the earth like that, but i never said it was perfect.
Your mention of smacking blocks between cutscenes is basically how i felt about Days. I didnt care that a lot of the missions were kind of monotonous because I was there for the storyas for the ice cream scenes, most of them were very short and didnt say much just because it was something that they did every day, and it shows one after every mission you complete.

Her "real" model that roxas sees is basically namine with dark hair.And every time the camera focuses on one person in the cutscenes, you always see Xion how that person sees her. When Axel is talking, she looks the same as when Roxas is talking. But when someone like Saix is talking, she goes back to being hooded.

The biggest problem with Days is its pacing, and how they handled Xion.
Xion as a character is fine. But her role serves no purpose (that is, the reason Roxas leaves the Organization) in the context of a cast which manipulates and schemes against each other. She was made way too important for what she actually did (even the game's tagline is "What mattered the most was remembered the least.") and stole the spotlight from the members who desperately needed more characterization, such as Saïx, who is now a major character in the story.
I genuinely think that, without Xion, the story would have been much evenly-paced and well-written. We could see Roxas ACTUALLY interact with the Organization he was apart of and see him deal with their scheming and using him as a tool directly rather than through the conflict with Xion. They had this big cast but only focused on three of the characters. That's just bad.
The gameplay is boring and tedious, which also doesn't help matters. But this is a whole separate list of problems I have.

I would argue that in BBS he sounds rough as it's one of his first times doing the voice, if not the very first time officially doing it. In CoM and KH2 they more taunt Sora with the idea. Demyx, Larxene, and Xemnas all mention that they might have hearts, but all of them are doing it to manipulate sora. Hell, when Xemnas does it, Sora calls his bullshit and Xemnas is like "fine, you got me"

I guess if you really wanted to get to know all the XIII members then I can see that the game fell short there. Half of them died before they even really said anything.
But as a tragedy between 3 friends I think it's a great story. That's just how I choose to look at days.
I definitely share the notion that Xaldin, Lexaeus, Zexion, Larxene, Marluxia, Luxord, and a few others really got fucked over in terms of characterization.
As for the gameplay... yeah it's really nothing special and can be rather clunky. I wont argue with that.

Personally, it's my second best OST from the series. Oath has just too many great soundtracks that I tend to associate with ball-breaking hard bosses. Ys I & II have memorable tracks too, but I think Ark of Napishtim is even more underrated than Seven. Hate to say that too, but I thought that Celceta's OST was probably the worst among all Ys games.
