Get ASUS ROG, they sell good stuff. I bought one myself because I travel between 2 places weekly and I had the choice to either not play vidya for 4 days of the week or build 2 desktop computers.

A combination desktop and netbook is cheaper and you will be more satisfied in the long run. I drank the "gaming laptop" Kool-Aid years ago in college and got a piece of shit that overheated constantly and could never spend two hours off battery. It ended up dying just after my warranty expired a little over a year later so all that money went down the hole.
I ended up dragging my desktop to my dorm anyway and was much more satisfied. I later bought a netbook for cheap and was extremely satisfied with its 5 hour battery life. Plus I can play all the games from my classic PC game backlog. Best of all, I'm still using it 3 years later.

Bad experiences. I had one with constant overheating problems and the battery life while playing games was about 2 hours maximum. That was about 7 years ago so they've probably improved
But it's not really necessary to own one because modern PC games suck or have low requirements and there's a ton of old games you can play. I don't have an urge to play Crysis 3 laptop or not.

There's nothing that you could play on the go that would require top-tier parts. You'd look like a moron playing with like a mouse and a cooling pad (which you will need) in public. Anything else (like frequent travel) can work just fine with a small-form-factor PC and (if needed) monitor.

If you're going to buy a gaming laptop make sure you put a copper shim between the GPU's diode and the heatsink with thermal compound on each side. I experienced a ~15C temp decrease on my shitty 5 year old ASUS laptop after doing this because of poor heatsink pressure. Also make sure the fan runs at 5200 RPM constantly by cutting the fan's blue wire or through software. Most software won't recognize laptop fans.

I'm in physics + CSCI, I like to be able to really see a lot of pages and once because there's a lot involved with that kind of stuff. Having a laptop for my programming assignments while I have my book beside me is really helpful. Being able to have a larger book and seeing large segments of sample code or a big derivation is pretty helpful too.
As for my electives yeah, I generally get digital copies of the books.

I like my laptop because I can do the above things alone, or with a group of friends, and then seamlessly transition into playing RTS or what have you on the fly while we're all hanging out in our study group, when we're done with our work.
I'm not going to go to my friend group / study group, and pull out a small laptop, a tablet, and then go to my car, bring my desktop in with me, then go back and grab my monitor, speakers + keyboard + mouse and set ALL of that up.
They aren't worthless. They're just not a necessity for a lot of lifestyles. Many, many university students benefit from paying a little extra for a convenience. Many don't. It all depends on how you plan to live / travel / study, and you can't blanket that kind of experience or request with a simple "laptops are shit, period".

I believe I have the exact same model as your picture, at least it's externals. They change it every year with slightly better processors and intergrated graphics cards.
Alienware gayman laptops were always shit and optimized for no better than 720p
That computer in your picture has by far one of the most impressive laptop coolant systems i've ever seen, because of it's over ride program.
No bullshit thirdparty software to change the fan, you press that button on the dash above the F# keys and your fan goes maximum power.
Loud as fuck, but almost entirely unnoticeable when using headphones.
Actually now that i think about it, the laptop i have also has a finger pad disable button (and honesty the intention and placement is a lot better than most computers so your left palm doesn't activate it while typing) but even then you press that button and the pad is completely disabled so only an external mouse will work.
After nearly 2 years of intense use my process or and GPU idle at around 40C. For a laptop, that's impressive.
You should be able to, at this point, find a refurbished laptop with 4GB DDR3 equivalent graphics for under 1000 dollars. It's 3DMark Score would hover around 7500-8500.
Nearly any modern game would function just fine at 1080 on high settings with maybe 2x or 4x AA.
My only real qualms with their laptops are their unimpressive sound cards, built in speakers, and the fact that the dimmest settings for screen brightness are still fairly bright. For non-gaman purposes the things can last 4-6 hours on battery.
If you need a laptop for other purposes but also want a gaming PC, it may be a valid an economical compromise but only if you absolutely need a laptop for other functions.

My gayam laptop similar to OP's picture has been constantly plugged in for about 2 years now. Absolutely zero issues. Even on hibernate I just leave the plug in.
A previous laptop that was for college is 5 years old now. It is now the default "home PC" that my family in general uses in the living room. It's also been plugged in most of it's life.
That one also has no issues other than a slowly increasing idle temperature average of it's processor.
Some batteries from some companies are simply shit and die regardless.

Can't tell you much about the entire spectrum except that I bought me an Asus N5550JK and I'm happy.
1080p IPS, aluminum, and an NVIDIA Maxwell. Threw a 480GB SSD in it and it's feeling like heaven.
How do you maintain a pc and how often should I do it? I recently built my first pc a couple months ago, so I'm not sure what I should be doing to to keep it in good condition.

You're forgetting one of the big reasons why gaming laptops are shite, which is short battery life and the overheating. Even if you have the money to blow, they aren't really that portable anyway.

If you have an android phone you can just get a moga controller for ~$50 and get the same results. There's even a streaming app called Limelight that tricks your desktop into thinking it's an nvidia shield and it works exactly the same.

Dust the insides every once in a while. I do it every 6 months, or earlier if temps are creeping up (this has never happened to me though). Physically, that's about all you have to do.
