I'm not a weeaboo, but god damnit this shit pisses me off.

Or more recently.
>One of the English VA's put a lot of soul into the voice of the character he's speaking for.
>Japanese VA, despite being the original VA, butchers it and doesn't fit the character so well.
>>
>>255877638
You're not wrong, but Japanese voices sound better to you because you are not as familiar with hearing them. You aren't thinking 'this is actually Billy Bo Bob Thornton' from redneck ville trying to be intelligent.
>>
>>255877849
Yeah, but I'm talking about a very specific situation. The only possible way for me to play the game I'm describing is that I know japanese, since it's a JP only game being localized this year.

Playing a Japanese game with English dub is like watching the Simpsons with Spanish dub.

Always best to watch/play a game with the native language turned on, as you get the true experience that the creators intended.

Fucking Dangan Ronpa 2. God damnit, my favorite character had the best VA. I didn't understand a word he said, but everything he did say had so much soul to it. Listening to him talk was the most soothing thing and the most horrifying thing in the world.

One thing I've always enjoy about dubbed English stuff is when a character has an accent. It just feels so neat and fresh.

Makes me really like a lot of those kinds of characters.

You should try it sometime. If you don't like the English cast, there's dual audio.

This happens with a lot of female characters. That or the voice actress sounds like she's trying way too hard to fit the character.
>>
I think japanese is just easier to make entertaining character voices in sometimes. More of their grammar has spoken sounds, you can change the context of more things without altering voice pitch like in english.

>>
Imo, the Jap VAs will try their best, even if they don't like the character/show, whereas a Western VA will only put in any effort if they like the character/show.
>>
>>255880473
Mexican early dub > Spanish dub > Today's dub
It's not only the actors themselves who just stick to the character and display even less range than the games the ps4 has or the increasing number of gimmicky voices whose only appeal it's their novelty factor. The translation itself is incredibly rushed, many of the jokes are completely untouched - especially jarring with word based puns-, dialogue feels staged, as if translated word-by-word using google, and the way the new Simpson references american flavor-of-the-month deals just doesn't help.
>>

Drakengard 3's dub pissed me off so much because so many of the characters' tones and attitudes changed. It's like they didn't even listen to how the Japanese VA's delivered the lines. I mean I did play with the subs but playing the DLC was a nightmare because dub.
>>
>>255882597
I played the dlc on mute.

How do you know what you call "soul" isn't just the VA shouting into the mic?
>>
The main big problem is the cutesy girl type when it comes to localization. It just doesn't translate well at all. And lack of budget put into voice actors for ported JRPGs and similar.

Other than that it's usually fine. Anime is a different story because of the technical difficulties involved.

>>
>>255886783

And WHEE after spicey noodles and coffee voice sounds like shit, yeah yeah coincidence whatever

Tip for voice actors, hot food = bad for your voice quality, normally I drink some ice cold water before I start, that and your voice quality drops as the day goes on, if you ever want to do voice work etc, do it within the first 5-6 hours of your day, otherwise your vocal cords limber up and it changes in pitch, you're normally an octave or two lower for that time

And meh, works ok, sometimes you can go like a week or two without it, then you get like 4-10 calls to do stuff

Bad thing is overbooking, you do like 30-40 hours in a week you kill your voice quality, which is why most voice actors only hold 8-10 hour sessions for a week total
>>
>>255886943
>two fucking octaves lower
How
>>
>>255887006

Vocal cords tighten up during the day, so voice raises in pitch, hot liquid makes it worse

What is it about Japanese VAs that makes people think they're so much better than other VAs? I don't get it.

99% of the time you can tell what actor it is straight off because they can do one and precisely one fucking voice and it's the same handful of actors is in everything. Hanakana is in like half the shows every goddamn season. I suppose she's different though because she has two whole voices
>>
>>255886318
>I don't understand why they don't translate those sometimes, is it just because weebs like it or something? pic somewhat related

In the JP -> ENG case, it's usually the difference in subcultural relevance and budgeting that results in crap ENG dubs. A~B-list Japanese VAs work on the original, but the localization team usually doesn't get nearly enough money to hire A~B-list American VA.

Of course, there are rare exceptions, like Troy Baker in Tales of Vesperia. I'm sure his price has since skyrocketed, though...
>>
>>255887367

Voice actor guy here

Mostly its their inability to tell apart words and conviction

IE - You hear english every day, so you can understand when something is being said well or not

People who listen to a foreign language they don't understand, they don't understand the words, so they can only hear conviction, and because you don't know WHAT is being said, it seems more impressive

I can do the same thing by saying some french, people fawn all over it, when its just me saying different words
>>
>>255887378
they aren't really necessary in English though, except "sama" which you could just use "sir" or something like that in it's place

No, it's because accurately localising things like honorifics isn't really possible; especially so when it's plot-relevant.

What I don't understand is why they cared about keeping that kind of thing accurate when they were more than happy to Americanise a ton of other things, didn't bother to retain the original audio, and hired a bunch of valley hacks that sound like obnoxious American children to voice the characters.
Would've made more sense for them to just turn the honorifics into shit like "bro", "honey", "boss", and all that other shit you usually see in America-friendly localisation jobs.

To be fair voice acting is a much bigger industry in Japan because the japs are obsessed with cartoons and video games. Their vas get paid more and the industry is more competitive--whether that produces better voice acting in games is hard to say. but it's something to consider

While it's been steadily getting better since both video games and anime have been getting bigger markets; the studios handling dubbing/localization had insanely meager budgets and schedules to get the job done so they often had to rush the dub in just a few takes with cheap talent that they barely had any time to cast.

But luckily in the 90s companies started to notice if they put a bit more effort into the dub sales and reviews would improve; like take the Ranma 1/2 dub team or how for the Oh My Goddess dub they had an engaged couple voice Keiichi and Belldandy (The rest of the cast was a whole other story, though).
>>
>Japanese VA, despite being the original VA, butchers it and doesn't fit the character so well.
Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist.

Good goddamn the Japanese VA was so whiny and high-pitched. Handled it for an episode then switched. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>255887916

Doesn't bother me either way. Making the localisation super American is just as foreign to me as a more "faithful" translation.

I wish there were more British localisations. And not like The Last Story or Xenoblade, something with a dialect instead of super sanitised queen's English.

So you can pick any bums to voice over fictional languages and it will be good, right? Man, they probably waste lots of money for dubbing elves in the LotR movies using original actors voices, would be much cheaper to hire some pros from local radio station and no one could tell apart.
>>
>>255890234

Every movie in the last 50+ years is done twice

Actors act out the scene, which records all the dialog etc

Then they go to a recording studio, and they hear their acting, then try to re-create the lines for the audio soundtrack, after which a sound editor trims/cuts them to fit them to the video footage
>>
>>255890539
Yes, I already know that. So why they used expensive hollywood actors to dub elvish roles in recording studio, when the could use cheap actors, because supposedly no one can hear quality of voice acting in languages they don't understand?
>>
>>255890234
