Bro and I have been playing with two mages (two of each elemental), a dps/tank kind of deal (Madora) and a rouge build, and I can't imagine playing with any other team. Be patient with the rouge. He/she sucks ass until like half way through the game, but when you get to the forest it'll do insane amounts of damage.

I found this game tedious, mostly because the plot didn't draw me in at all. I can't be the only one that is bored with generic fantasy settings am I? I feel like there is no creativity in most RPGs these days, and side quests in almost all games just seem like tacked on BS. Surprisingly, the only game in recent memory that I played with good side quests was Skyrim, but maybe that was because the main quest and faction quests were completely underwhelming so anything else seemed good in comparison.
And no I'm not saying skyrim was a great game, before someone tries to put me on blast

It's pretty good, i kind of want to mod out the way the environmental effects go everywhere when you attack something. Having a dog poison and burn all of the groups melee people when you hit it with a fire arrrow is annoying as fuck.
Imo spells should result in environmental effects everywhere, creature affinities should just effect resistance bonuses.

The reason the stuff on the surface is so shitty is because they're putting more effort into the deeper stuff. Well that and Bethesda just can't pull off everything they want to so they end up making everything subpar.

Okay, so one person keeps the save, the other just joins the game whenever said bros are playing. Your character doesn't carry over or anything, it's a drop in drop out sort of deal.
You can set the control to whatever characters to whichever player, but we've stuck with the same ones the whole game. Oh and there's 4 characters in the party, so ideally each person gets two, unless you want to split it 3/1 for some reason.
It plays pretty well considering it's really built like a single player game. We just share loot, have our own money, get our own gear for our own characters, and give eachother gear/money when it seems beneficial.
But in terms of playing alone, you definitely couldn't play the same game by your self, you'd have to start a different one. The host could, but the other player would miss out.
The only problem i have with this game is that it's artstyle comes off kind of like torchlight.

That's true to an extent, but the fact is that a sexxboi like Sephiroth could never wield such a blade without some huge muscles.
Neurological strength is a real thing, and is the biggest part of why beginner lifters see such huge and quick gains. It's essentially the brain getting better at using the muscles, by making all the fibers pull in sync. But there's a limit to it and eventually you're not gonna see much more there.
At an intermediate level AT MOST you're not gonna see real strength gains without some mass gains as well.
