So how do y'all think a wide-scale increase in internet speeds will affect gaming? More server-side computation? Supportable server sizes? An end to the excuse of lag? People out in the sticks without Fiber-level connections not being able to play shit at all?
>>
>>255354890
Speed, as in up- and down-stream, is irrelevant for gaming.
>>
lag will stay

transferring more at once doesn't mean it actually transfers faster

will have to keep waiting for FTL communication

Actual programmer here for project hate machine, if you've heard of it.

Yeah, latency is a big deal. Server side prediction of player movements is also a big deal; higher bandwidth will ultimately lead to higher quality of online play; if programmers take advantage of it.

Compare a game like Monster Hunter to a game like Minecraft.
In Minecraft they have absolutely no prediction happening; which leads to players standing still on another person's screen in situations of extreme latency; meanwhile in a game like Monster Hunter, you will see the players still running in the direction they were going; and monsters still moving around (be it semi randomly; they are on the right track)

My point is that good programmers will take advantage of having more bandwidth available (and also less latency; as the overall infrastructure improves).

Arkansas.

Internet in the US anywhere but the coasts or major cities is a joke.

There's often only one ISP out in the 'sticks,' and they throttle your bandwith to shit if you use more than a miniscule amount. We're paying probably $800/yr for this service.

The only ISP here is Hughes Net satellite, which not only has terrible speed, but I've never once seen ping lower than 700, so online games are out of the question too. Thankfully, I'm moving out in 2 weeks, as it's my parents house.

Google fiber doesn't have a data cap. In a perfect world Google fiber will spread and through competition, it'll force shitty ISPs like Comcast and Time Warner to remove their data caps and up their speeds.

The internet world in the US will completely change when google fiber spreads. Sadly I don't see it becoming wide spread until 2050.

This is as fast as I can get in my area. The provider actually stopped signing up new customers here too because it's actually slower than their worst tier now. On the plus side though, whatever they use to monitor bandwidth usage just doesn't work. I've routinely gone over 1TB/month on a 150GB/month limit since November and I haven't heard a thing.

Video game streaming. It's only a matter of time when 0 latency leads to companies starting subscription based services where you choose what kind of specs you want, let's say based on subscription level, and you can play and store all of your games remotely without having to personally own a rig. Think of the amount of money they would make off of the crowds that want high end rigs but can't afford/don't know how to make them.

The speeds won't matter if we still live in a data capped age. You can easily go over a 300GB month within 1-2 weeks if you stream HD movies/shows. Video game streaming will eat a lot more than that.

it will take at least 20 years before gig speeds are available in more than 50% of civilization. so gaming with other nations will still be shit.

Though once google fiber, and if these other isp's improve their speed and latency by getting faster processing network tech, it can improve gaming a lot for just playing within your city.

In a game like CoD where local players can host, if you ping 3-10ms within your town, it will be pretty much a LAN-like experience.

The only people who will really see a noticeable gaming improvement from Google fiber or some other fiber solution are the people in areas who will not have it for another 50 years. The cable connection that you consider shitty (and they are, by almost every measure that isn't "better than dialup") is in most cases fine if you live near a population center, which are the areas that have any hope of ever seeing fiber.

Sure games could change to the point that they can take advantage of that, but it will take a serious event to change that, and the network will have to be in place, stable, and proven before anybody has the balls to throw their money down on it. And if they do the first few will be something shitty, like the Playstation 8 requires a fiber network because you don't actually buy games, they just stream everything to you as long as your account is active.
>>
Better connections will lead to publishers pushing harder for digital downloads. I wouldn't be surprised if next gen's games are just download codes.

1) Classify ISPs as Title II Common carriers, giving FCC more oversight over their business practices.
2) Force ISPs to share their backbone network, allowing smaller upstart ISPs to come in and undercut the established ISPs (Think Straighttalk/Cricket/bargain cell carriers that borrow from AT&T and Verizon towers)
3) Break the franchise agreements that let ISPs have a legal monopoly over entire cities at states. This will allow more competition to prosper and aggressive price wars.

All it takes is the political willpower to change the status quo.

well, i hired a 30mbps ISP the other day, and the router they gave me did not change IP upon being rebooted (it didn't have a button, so it was unplugging and plugging for me).

the ISP confirmed me they have dynamic IPs, but that they changed by themselves randomly (also, they give you a completely locked router that you can't configure).

even if i did get my own router i wouldn't be able to change IPs by turning it off and on, so i decided to keep my old 6mbps ISP that allows me to shitpost endlessly or just do regular posts that happen to anus annihilate the janitor

I live in a place where internets are generally pretty fast, but I was stuck with 1mbs until 2010 when I could finally get my own internet. My dad was simply extremely stubborn about our home internet, anything better than dialup was good for him since he was stuck in the late 80s in computer technology - he'd only adopt something new if it was a brand new technology altogether (we got DVDs and digital cameras as early as 2000 in contrast to all that), he'd never let us upgrade anything.

They could be trying to get you to drop them.

See, ISPs get contracts from the government to provide internet to a certain area. These contracts stipulate they have to "do their best" to provide the people in that area that want internet with a reliable minimum speed. Now, it costs them more than they make to provide internet to certain areas, but they have to provide it because of their contract. To get you to drop them and "voluntarily" decide you don't want internet ("why the fuck am I paying for this garbage I'm gonna try satellite/dial-up because I am an average person and I don't need it for anything other than emails, shopping, and social media sites") they fuck over your connection to try to get you and your neighbors to drop so they can eventually shut down their service in non-profitable areas.

Alternatively their system could actually just be total garbage.
