Getting a healthy pug is like rolling the dice. Many of the breed markers are just straight out genetic defects that the breeders propagate just for the breed's looks. For example, a "pure" pug should have a twice-curled tail which is actually caused by a spine deformity, and sometimes it's not limited to the tail end of the spine, either. Breathing problems caused by the flat face which is a result of a deformed jaw, misshapen teeth, etc. Lots of genetic shit that's potentially fatal, and sometimes tough to identify in puppies.
One particularly bothersome thing that all pugs get is the shallow eye sockets. Pugs need a special harness and can't be walked on a normal leash, because a standard dog collar can pull at their skin and pop out their eyes. Same with collisions; if your pug runs into a wall, and pugs are kinda stupid like that, their eyes may pop out of their sockets. Such situations need immediate care and carry a risk of blindness.
A good pug is a good dog, though. They have a unique personality. Really gentle, loving, amusing and a great family dog.
There's a kennel in Germany that's trying to breed a kind of long-nosed pug. With the breeds that are going into it, it's looking to be a healthy kind, though it's not a proper pug. Still a good alternative if you're in Germany/got the money.
