I know I used to play a good amount of turn based RPGs as a kid, but don't remember very many of them. I like dragon quest 1 on the NES but stopped eventually because the amount of grinding that I would have had to do was ridiculous and I was playing on an actual NES so couldn't speed it up.

There's a certain amount of grinding thaOne of thet's acceptable in JRPGs, IMO, and it varies for different people. The issue is that you need to have *some* way of adding difficulty without requiring pointless methods of padding out the game with repetitive tasks.

FF1, 2 and 3, and most FFs I guess are a bit too grindy for me. Golden Sun had a pretty good (smaller) amount of fighting necessary to remain on top of things. Chrono trigger had slightly more grinding too, but this was at least somewhat mitigated by not having random encounters, allowing you to reliably avoid battles or reliably engage in them, which was quite good. Modern Tales games have done a good job with cutting back on forced grinding too, I think.

Nocture is the real deal, DDS strikes a balance between Persona waifu shit and the mainline games. Raidou has a cool setting and awesome music but the combat is pretty shitty, 2 is a tad better in that regard. Something to look into after you're already sick of the same old demon models.

Grew up playing the Final Fantasy games, never really looked beyond them other than DQVIII which though I really enjoyed I never finished. A lot of games just never got brought over down here so I never knew about them and figured FF was the best they had to offer and after FFXII I kind of gave up on them and played WoW till late 2012.

How ever I was watching a lot of anime and I stumbled across Atelier which rekindled my love of JRPGs. Since then I've played some of the Tales games, went through Chrono Trigger on the DS and currently going through P3FES. Got Ys on Steam so I may go through that eventually. It really feels like I've missed out on so much though, never played Lunar, Grandia, Suikoden, Eathbound etc

Glad you managed to break out of the Final Fantasy trap. Many people fail to realize that Final Fantasy, while decent, is far from all that JRPGs have to offer. I too started out by playing through all of the (pre-PS2) FF games, but now, after playing many other series, I wonder how I ever put up with the extreme repetitive grinding present in all of those games.

You can play literally every tales game available. Why are you even asking? On PS3 you can play Graces and Xillia, plus, in August Xillia 2, and later on Zestiria.

On 360 you can play Vesperia. Don't let the faggots fool you, even with some minor cut content it still has the most content out of any other tales game and is damn good.

All the others are on old enough systems that you can emulate them. There aren't any on Wii U.

If you don't speak Japanese, thank you're lucky stars that you have a 360, because you can play Tales of Vesperia in English (and you really fucking should) and won't need to participate in that retarded chimping out that goes on every time Vesperia PS3 is mentioned. If you do speak Japanese, play the Japan-only PS3 version instead.

>>
>>255048809
If you have a flashcart that supports GBA games, those are the handheld ones to play first. Fire Emblem 7 (released just as "Fire Emblem" outside of Japan) is a common entry point, and has a great but balanced difficulty level. Afterwards, Sacred Stones is another GBA game which is good but slightly easier due to grinding being more possible. FE6 was Japan only, but has a full fan translation available. The games on DS were just remakes of older ones and definitely feel dated, but you may still like them. TBH, I liked awakening more than the games available on the DS, but not nearly as much as I liked the GBA ones.

Lose all your items/levels in a tower with a story that's purposefully abstract. The guy who wrote it said he likes when it's your job to piece together the story since it makes it more intriguing.

Designs and shit are great, and each run gets you closer. The game wants you to figure out how to progress.

>>255048391

>One of the worst
>Better than 1-3, 11, 12, maybe 6 depending on your tolerance for 6's bullshit

If anything it's just middle of the road. It's still a good SRPG with a lot of replay value. It has some balance issues with Pair Up and the fact that you can turn some of your units into unkillable gods, isn't as tight of a strategy game as some of the others thanks to the general shift in focus to eugenics and character upgrades, and is more "anime," but it's still worth playing for fans of that genre.

And for 3DS it's basically the only worthwhile SRPG aside from Devil Survivor Overclocked and a few DS games.
>>
>>255051217
He said "All", so really, the best place to start would be learning Japanese while playing NES games.

Somebody should try to calculate how many hours it would take to complete (just the main story) all of the JRPGs ever created.
>>
>>255051204
I'd say kind of. An element that divides people is that you have two bars: energy and health. Once energy runs out, you start losing health. Eat things to regain. Great enemy designs, levels and items. I'd say it's pretty far from traditional but I really don't want to give anything away. Go in without any expectations. If you're confused after like 4 hours, that's okay. If it gets frustrating, it's okay to read a faq. It's randomly generated anyway.

>>
>>255052387

The online connectivity bullshit stops being annoying once they quit throwing it in your face, you'll basically connect once a day for some new villagers and maybe some optional bosses, set your villagers to build some shit, and forget about it.

I thought it was a solid classic-style JRPG with a few glaring flaws. The job system was a lot of fun, especially as a huge fan of FFV and FFT, the music was great, and the true ending was really cool. Pacing was a load of fuck and chapter 5 and 6 were garbage (although I liked 7 and 8 a lot and think people generally exaggerate how bad the latter half of the game is), but I think it was still a good game. Just maybe not the SAVIOUR OF JRPGS people were hyping it up to be.

Hopefully Bravely Second deals with the pacing issues and doesn't pull the same thing Bravely Default did in chapter 5, because it has the potential to be a fantastic JRPG if they learn from their mistakes.

It was more due to the poor selection in stores, I got a debit card in 2012 which has made buying stuff online a lot easier and I've seen a lot of stuff get mentioned. Only thing is I prefer to buy games rather than pirate but a lot of stuff just didn't get a PAL release.

>>255048259
Persona 3 is long, the S-Links aren't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be though its fairly typical anime tier stuff so if you don't mind that you should be ok. Tower climbing is boring though and the combat feels slow but it's fairly easy and you don't really need to grind as long as you have good Persona.

Dragon Quest VIII was rather comfy and could be a bit grindy. I might go through it again this time via emulation as it looks quite nice in HD. Shame they never brought DQVII to the West, I should try track down the DS titles.

Speak of the DS what other titles are essential? I just have Chrono Trigger and Strange Journey at the moment.
>>
>>255053989
The cutscenes weren't exactly ugly, but they were a bit choppy and lacked detail. There were some nice looking environments, but the more organic stuff just shit the bed. We did get DQVII, just not the remake. You can emulate the PS1 version if you want. It's good but the pacing is ridiculously slow, at times it seriously feels like it's never going to end.

For DS pick up Radiant Historia and the Etrian Odyssey games (if you can only get one then make it 3 but they're all good to some extent).
>>
>>255054556
There are several great JRPGs on the DS. The World Ends With You is awesome, Radiant Historia is pretty good. Pokemon Platinum and HG/SS are good if you're into that. It has the best version of FF4 (but you've probably already played it on another system). There's a fan translation of Tales of Innocence, which is mostly pretty fun (if you refuse to pirate, you probably won't be able to play it). There are a few Etrian Odyssey games on DS, if you want something more dungeon-crawly. SMT Devil Survivor 1 and 2 are also on DS. I'm definitely forgetting about several more notable ones.

>tfw grew up with 90's JRPG's like Chrono Trigger, FFIV, VI, Xenogears etc
>mfw 90% of modern JRPG's are nothing but loli fests to cater to the lowest common denominator because that shit is more popular than ever now
>tfw Lost Odyssey and Xenoblade will probably be the last non-weeab JRPG's I'll get for a long time

Being a non weeab JRPG fan is suffering.

>It has the best version of FF4
GBA with sound patch is best, fite me.
>>
>>255055286
Oh yeah I've got the 4th on the 3DS I played a bit of it.

>>255055351
Radiant Historia looks interesting, I'll check it out.

I already have the PSP and PS1 version of FFIV, don't really need another copy.
>>
>>255056646
But there are a lot more modern JRPGs. The anime visuals are a little tiring, but I'm glad that modern JRPGs are trending towards more interesting combat mechanics, at least.

I agree that Lost Odyssey was the last good Final Fantasy, though.

>I agree that Lost Odyssey was the last good Final Fantasy, though.
Amen brotha. Game had some undeniable flaws, but that was the first JRPG in a long time that immersed me in its story and world to the same degree as the earlier Final Fantasies.

Hey, I've played the GBA version more than any other version, and like it quite a bit. I thought the bonus dungeon was fucking great, and it's too bad that it wasn't ported to the GBA version. Still, the DS version did a lot of stuff well. It did a great job of making 4 seem like a "modern" (post 7) FF, for better or worse. Even the voices were okay for the DS, and the sound was high quality, even if not entirely true to the original.
>>
>>255057394
Oops, meant to say that it's too bad the bonus dungeon from the GBA version wasn't ported to the DS version.
>>
Ok, you guys have to help me out with something.
I was talking about SNES/PS1 era JRPGs with a friend and he swears he played one where the plot twist was that near the end of the game while the party is sleeping, the main character gets up and starts talking directly to the player and reveals that he was the bad guy they were hunting all along.

I said he's either getting confused with KOTOR or Breath of Fire 4 or even maybe Legend of Dragoon.

Is this an actual JRPG or is he wrong?
>>
>>255057394
I'm just messing bro. It probably is the 'best' version (hell it's the only time I've found chibi models endearing) but the GBA version is still my favorite, maybe because it brings me back to my first playthrough. The did a great job with the DS version

No problem. God, I love FF4.

>End up in the land of summons, which is a full damn town, fucking deep underground. Shit's deep, man.

>mfw all the summons are pure fucking bros

Man FFIV and VI where the shit for summon lore and characterizations. The later games completely strip away their character and make them nothing but shitty weapons and plot devices.

Meeting all your favourite summons and talking to them was amazing, plus dat town theme:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkrHfpkl9hk

Been thinking about emulating Xenoblade Chronicles now that my rig isn't a piece of shit. What's the general consensus on this game? Pretty solid, or did it end up being lackluster. Is the story pretty good and can I sink a lot of hours into it?

Bravely Default. You can just turn off enemy encounters and explore if you want. :3
>>
>>255062107
One of my favorite games personally. The story is nothing special, but avoids doing anything annoying at least. The game will definitely give you a lot of hours, I put 100 hours and still had plenty of side content left.

I bought the game, put in 10 hours and stopped. The world is pretty and I'm excited for X so I have to pick it back up some time soon. Plus that fucking music. I just need to make sure I don't burn out on side quests

Dragon Quest is pretty radical. Though it really makes me want to play DnD.
