So I was digging around the net and I happened to come across some Dreamcast magazine scans from 1999. This is the very first issue from the Official Dreamcast Magazine (this is the UK edition; it also had a US edition) released Sept. 23, 1999, only 2 weeks after the North America launch on 9/9/99.

Also mods, vidya magazines ARE vidya; if anything, they're more vidya than the daily shitflinging system warring threads.
>>
AND HERE WE GOO!
>>
I've always loved the idea behind the dreamcast.
It's games had a specific feel to them, they were very ambitious for their time.
It's unfortunate it died so horribly.
I wonder if people in the future will say the same about the WiiU?
A system that is selling like shit but had an interesting if limited library?
>>
>>255040470
dreamcast was far from limited though, it had some of if not THE most accurate fighting game ports, to the point where third strike and MvC are still played on the dreamcast if a cabinet isn't available in tournaments.

It also had a pretty fuckin huge lineup of blockbuster games.

the only reason it died was because sega totally forgot antipiracy measures and you could just straight up burn CDs on like 80% of dreamcasts in circulation in NA.
>>
>>255039610
kind of lewd for a gaming magazine
>>
Soory about the delay. Had to afk for a bit.
>>
>>
>>255040940
It wasn't the piracy that killed the Dreamcast. You have to remember this is 1999 Internet we're talking here, fucking dial-up mang. It would've taken ages for a 700MB to download and I feel there were more potential buyfags than piratefags on the DC but I could be wrong.

It was Sega's previous shit decisions that ruined the system.
>>
>>255040470
That's just trying to heap current console war bullshit onto the Dreamcast. Everyone tries to call something 'the next Dreamcast" but it simply can't happen again. Cause the Dreamcast had record breaking sales at the time, before the PS2 destroyed all those records. The Dreamcast pretty much had a solid must buy game a month until it really hit its stride, and even some of the meh titles for the Dreamcast early on blew PS1 and N64 games out of the water on a technical level. It basically had everything going for it except Sega's tarnished as fuck rep and the looming PS2 launch. It didn't have the customer base to demand shelf space in a situation where Sony could just bully to tempt stores into focusing entirely on hyping the PS2 (which wasn't hard cause it also pushed DVD sales through the roof). To be "the next Dreamcast" a system would have to have a satisfying as fuck library in only two years, and then die simply because there was no shelf space to even consider continuing. Which just can't happen at all in today's market.
>>
Also, guys. Try to keep posting to bump the thread. I can't bump it because m00t's a fag
>>
>>255041098
All UK gaming magazines were lewd as fuck, at least at that time.
>>
>>255041914
Nah. It was really the piracy. In the US at least, stores were ditching dreamcast stock because of it, the hardware was barely selling after a few months, the only games people bought were fucking PSO and sonic adventure/2.

It was doing fine up until the PS2 launch as >>255041991 said. most people knew it was coming so it was just a time filler, think saturn. nobody wanted to buy another saturn. And those that did either bought it for PSO or to pirate everything.

How many games did Sony say were in dev for PS4 at launch? Like 100-something right? Ha, eat shit Sony.
Too bad a huge chunk of them probably got cancelled later on.
>>

of those 500 games, around 380 or so were arcade ports.

>>
>>
>>
>>255042934
is that the proto-"greatness awaits..." ?
>>
>>255043398
Sure as hell sounded like it. PS4 and DC have at least three similarities: both had massive hype, both were massive improvements over their predecessors and both had a lot of PC ports at the time, moreso than any other system.
>>
>>
>>255042934
Every new game that Sega put out for the early days of the Xbox and Gamecube was probably in development first for the DC. There were a lot of neat ideas that were announced for it that never became games at all though.
>>
>you'll never have a sultry look on your face while playing DC
>>
Just finished playing my Dreamcast a few minutes ago, one of my favorite systems ever. Wish more people gave it a chance.

And btw the sole reason the Dreamcast died was Sega was bleeding money as a company and was on the verge of bankruptcy. They didn't sell enough units in time to have a profitable market, so they bailed out. PS2 launch helped kill the Dreamcast momentum, especially in Japan where it pretty much killed the Dreamcast on the spot. Software sales were bad as well, probably due to piracy.
>>

It's worth noting that the Murrika consoles had the 56kbps modem.

>>
Worse part about owning a dreamcast is the fact that getting an arcade stick was always a pain in the ass.
I already have 2 light guns if I only had the arcade sticks then I could really enjoy it, would be nice to have a modem too since I don't have one.

Ahh yes, sports games on the DC. Was one of the few games that didn't have any sports games from EA (mainly because EA got butthurt for some reason and pulled support). Didn't matter as Sega would make their own sports series, the 2K series, which proved to be so succesful that EA, in a fit of panic, struck a contract with the NFL to make sure they were the only ones in town to make football games (surprising that they never did the same with the NBA).

Is that a terrible thing? For a system to have a ton of arcade-y games? You know previous Sega consoles were mostly known for their arcade-y games right? You know Sega MAKES arcade games games, right?
>>
>>
>>255055805
>For a system to have a ton of arcade-y games?
Yes.
Because there's more to most genres than just simplistic gameplay.
It's like all those Nascar and whatnot racing arcades at the... arcades, cinemas or wherever they're set up. Those are fun for maybe an hour, but they can't compete with stuff like Gran Turismo, Colin McRae Rally and similar games.
That's the fate the DC had in basically every genre. Bunch of arcade shit and nothing more.

We're talking about the DC here, I'm not going to write down how much I like or dislike Sega's other consoles. Or games, for that matter.

So what you're complaining about is the lack of presence of other genres? Understandable, I guess. I can see someone being more accustomed to say, RPGs, not liking the Dreamcast.

Man, the UK in the late 90s.. Britpop ended, that awkward transition in the 00s, film camera quality was becoming more bright..

It's just crazy to look back on. Those old Playstation magazines or N64 magazines too spark the same feeling. Video games were marketed so differently back then, with the whole demo disc thing and such.

My first witnessing to the Dreamcast was going into Virgin and seeing one out and ready to play. I wanted one so much, but being a poorfag sucks. Sega definitely hit the nail on the head with the marketing. It was the trendy console to have. The controller looked weird with the little cartridge thing and that was intriguing.

MvC1 wasn't only on the DC, but it included a 2v2 mode so 4 players could play together (using standard tag in rules of course).
