I had the EXACT same feelings and reaction to that ending as you, and I can with absolute certainly tell you do NOT want to know "the answer".
It's the stupidest, most juvenile fucking asspull imaginable and severely cheapens what was otherwise an amazing ending. Also it cheapens the characters themselves.

The combat is tolerable, it's the random encounters every 5 steps that gets really annoying.
You'll get to one of the later dungeons with n increased encounter rate and want to kill yourself it's so bad. But it's worth at least one playthrough.

Nah its the updated version of the PS2 game with an optional ending segment at the end that explains things better (though it's very grindy).
The PSP version has positives like actually being able to control your party and the option of playing as a girl. But all the walking around the school/town is replaced by menus and it's ridiculously easy.

You can start it in late November, but you get hit with the career experience shit, then everyone gets depressed for 2/3 of December and isn't available for social linking, and then you get winter break which steals the last bit of December and a third of January.
So you can start it all the way back in November, but can only get it to around rank 5 or 6 and then you're stuck until January.
