I 100%'d it in three days and immediately fenced it to Gamestop. They gave me around 30 bucks, so I BASICALLY came out even, at least.

This was me. I was so excited for a new metroid game I bought it the day it came out. I read the reviews beforehand and they all said it was a solid game, but they all complained about the authorization. I was kinda interested in how a story oriented metroid would turn out, and flipping between perspectives was kinda fun. Overall it was a solid game 7/10, I do regret paying 60 dollars for it, but only because it immediately dropped in price, a rarity for any Nintendo game. Seriously I've seen this thing for sale for 5 bucks at Gamestop.

I picked up my pre-order from Gamestop knowing that the reviews said that it was an ok game but the story was bad. What I saw was unimaginable: Samus had been reduced to a crying child, plot holes galore, multiple inconsistencies with series canon, a complete idiot of a CO in Adam Malkovich, and the dullest monolog spoken by a non robot character that I've ever heard.
I thought about trading it in but I decided to keep it as a reminder. This is what happens when one man gets drunk with power. It will sit on my shelf for eternity as a warning to all.

What happened to me is I tried to use regular bombs, I died, restarted right there and went "Oh, I probably need to use a Power Bomb." and it worked. If they made you do the whole fight over, it'd be shit design, but with that immediate checkpoint, I'm kind of okay with it for dramatic purposes.

No, I was referring to the first three because it was the foundation of what the series was built upon, which Other M completely shat on, both from a gameplay and story perspective. In gameplay, Other M got rid of the exploration, secrets, and progression, and as far as story goes, the plot that was wrapped up with Super Metroid was totally undone. Ridley, Mother Brain, and the Metroids, which were all dead at the end of the trilogy, were all brought back. I know that Fusion brought two of those back, but I actually don't like what Fusion did storywise either, but that's another thing altogether.

If the cutscenes were removed from the game completely it would still suck ass. Controls are shit, everything is auto-aimed to make up for it, environments are linear and unimaginitive, exploration is limited to about 5 feet of hallway, motion control missiles break the flow of gameplay, regenerating health means you are never in any danger, platforming feels more stiff than a DMC game, and the major bosses are defeated with the aformentioned motion controls gimmick.

The gameplay swings from bland and boring to outright broken. Characters are all fucking stupid or just dont give enough of a fuck to survive. Ass pulls and lore rape abound. Sakamoto hasn't said word 1 publicly since Other M came out. Nintendo in general hasn't commented except Reggie basically going out and saying they were disappointed with where the sales were going to end up and backing up Sakamoto and Team Ninja and saying he thought he did a good job. Which, when you're the president, is pretty basic "sticking up for your employees" stuff.
People will tell you that Sakamoto, Reggie and Nintendo just fucking love Other M but the truth is they've gone out of their way to avoid talking about it as much as possible over the last three years. Miyamoto's spoken about Metroid multiple times the last few years, including at the last E3 and he completely neglected to mention Other M.
They know what people thought of Other M and they're trying to bury it as fast as anybody else.

On the other hand a Ridley and Space Pirate spin off game would be hype as fuck. Wherever on the time line, just Ridley getting his forces back together after their latest defeat. Other M's environments were literally that: environments. They were bland has all hell. The grassy environment was pretty dark and uncolorful. And what drives me bonkers is that I don't even know if the areas had music.
Prime 2 had 3 main areas and a hub. 1st area was boring, 2nd was a cool swamp with an even cooler underwater section, and 3rd was just fucking cool. They all had track themes that I remember to this day. Just compare Torvus Bog to Sector 1.
Look, I'm not hear to shit on Other M. It's not as bad as Metroid purist seem to parade it as, but it's not as great as these new Metroid kids seem to call it as. At the end of the day it was decent at best, and I'm even replaying it right now to see if my opinion changes. But when a game from 2004/05 blows it out of the water in terms or level design, that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, it's worth it. It's really fascinating, actually. It took me two playthroughs before I was finally able to appreciate how horrible this game was at literally every aspect.
The story is garbage, as you probably already know. You can't even skip cutscenes your first time through. What you may occasionally hear is that the gameplay itself is pretty solid and fun.
That's bullshit. I believed that lie too, until I played through the game the second time. It's actually incredible how shitty and boring this game is. The story is actually the BETTER half, because at least you feel something. Whether it's laughing at how stupid it is, or cringing at it's horribleness, you're having an experience. The gameplay itself is just BORING. It's not "bad", it's functional apart from the first person sections. The problem is, is that it's monotonous. It's soulless. The homogenous environments, the enemies, there lack of music, the gameplay being just tap + to win... But it's functional.
That's what amazes me about the game itself. Just about everything "works", but it has so little spark or soul that it's just... Incredible.

I got Other M on launch day. I don't regret it. I thought it was a fair game, despite Samus's cringeworthy voice actor and the waaaaaay too Japanese storyline sensibilities.

In fact, the whole relationship with Adam is strange for a number of reasons, but I want to know why the hell he went from being a military official Samus had respect for to, in her own words, "my best friend and the closest thing to a father I had." Especially taking into consideration that Other M takes place immediately before Fusion; if she cared this much about him, she would have been way more shaken up about his death which could not have happened more than a couple of months before.

3 hours in and oh boydid I have great fun! Thankfully this was also before people on the internet tried to push a meme on me that this game was bad because it made their waifu Samus girly. Loved seeing Ridley's life cycle, loved the enemy selection to. It had actual combat instead of FPS nonsense so I had something to entertain me from start to finish. My only real complaint (besides the awful samus) was it was very linear... but so was Prime 3. So that isn't a blemish against this game specifically as much as it just appears the Metroid franchise is no longer about exploration. Overall I'd give it a 7/10, would play again.
