Dark Messiah melee combat is shit though. You've got light attacks that barely do anything, enemy attacks with fucked up timings and range (like the goblins that can hit you with their short ass clubs from a mile off or all the enemies that hit before their swing). You don't know shit about video games. You had fast hits that could stagger enemies, heavy hits that break guards. Then you got specific weapons for each type, daggers for slicin' and dicin', staves for knocking things around. Sword for both.
This is one of my most re-installed games of all times. I always go back and play it again every couple years. Actually there was one time when by shear coincidence I managed to complete the game on the exact same day I had completed it the previous year. Confused me for a minute when I was looking at the timestamps on the savegames and thought they were out of order.

No, I played it on hard almost every time, and it's been several times through the years. The game is fun but melee weapon combat is just ass.
Spells are nice (pretty much easy mode in themselves), bows are at least functional, and kicking is probably the best part of the game. I've even done a stealth playthrough which wasn't as terrible as it could have been. Fighting with swords though is just ass.
I loved this game just for the glorious kicking mechanic. Otherwise combat actually does feel goodand you can see your own body

Just a PSA plug here, make sure you use Arx Libertatis if you decide to (re)install Arx Fatalis. Pretty much necessary for the game to run well on modern systems... or older ones for that matter.

First part after the tutorial is in a city. Then it goes on an island occupied by orcs for most of the game whilst navigating temple ruins, followed by its underground catacombs. Then there's a little more stuff to do on the island before going back to the city.

I found it a bit broken (atleast once you get the botomless quiver or what is that thing that gives you unlimited arrows called), you could usually just clear entire areas from distance and deal with the enemies indoors/close quarters using stealth. Also, playing DM on Hardcore is real fucking bullshit, enemies need to be finished off by stabbing them through the heart at least THREE TIMES before they die. Combine that with fighting multiple enemies without any possibility of enviroment kills and you're fucked.

I actually saved her on my first run. Refused to kill Xana, of course, was actually surprised when she attacked afterwards. Didn't expect Leanna to do something like that, especially since she couldn't even handle a ghoul and a single necromancer while together with another wizard.

What I didn't like about Dark Messiah was the levelling system and item requirements.
Just about the only really viable path was that of straight up melee combat, mage and range were more or less just stuff for you to do on your second playthrough.

Protip: If you suck at it save Leanna and expell XanaThis kills the demonThe weapons you get make Vampire Knights and Zombies your bitch for the rest of the game.
Although Saving Leanna is for fags, you should do multiple play throughs anyway.

The normal staffs still have Melee Combat reqs because they are not magical, though

I'm pretty sure you get more than enough points to buy the staff requirements. Endgame staves have mana drain and shit for wizards.
That said playing a mage gets boring as it's just shooting missiles at enemies.
I like the point based levelling system since it doesn't encourage one kind of play, it only encourages exploration. With exp you get the problem DEHR had certain methods are obviously better.

Nope, you needed that mana upgrade you're getting anyway as a wizard since it's required for mana regen. Except for the combat staff, but nobody cares about that one. Similarly, daggers need stealth upgrades to equip, you can do it without combat.
