Yes and no. The plots themselves are self-contained, but the games are connected, mostly just by the villains. Earthbound is a "sequel" to Mother, but it's not really clear how, and most people think it's some kind of timeline shift or parallel dimension. Well, okay, maybe there's a case for 1. That game's pacing and encounter rate are absurd and can be pretty tedious. It's one of those games that I'm kinda glad I played through but would probably never play again, and sometimes hesitate to recommend.
2 is worth playing though. Its battle system isn't quite as good as 3's but there's a lot more exploration and interesting settings and shit, with some fairly good boss battles. You could definitely argue that it's better than 3 in some regards.
