Parents are in the military so I grew up in Yokosuka. Still go to japan every year to visit my parents (for free).
Japan is a pretty cool place. Everyone is polite and they really don't have nationalistic people there that are xenophobic. Been everywhere in Japan. Also I'm the disgusting nigger race of Asian (filippino) and I didn't seem to have any problem. I remember I got lost once in Tokyo and an old lady was kind enough to lead me to my correct train back even though she didn't speak an ounce of english.

It is one of the most expensive cities in the world, talking about Tokyo anyways. Hotels charge you extra if you are by yourself. A run down, shitty hotel could cost anywhere from 100,000 Yen($100 USD) on up. A pod might be cheaper, but have fun with that.
Food is pretty cheap if you eat the cheap stuff, though. I typically can bring 5,000 yen into the city for a day trip and be fine.
