>>
>>252252378

My little brother downloaded the original Sonic games on his phone after playing Transformed with me and is playing through those. He also has Wonderful 101 and likes it because it's challening.

Maybe yours should git gud, faggot.
>>
>6 years old

>>
>>252254074
I didn't beat anything like super ghost and ghouls but I was at least able to do decent in super mario bros. And I got my gameboy at age 4 and did just fine with it then(although I only had pokemon until I was 5 then I got more stuff)

And he does like the games, after he gave up playing he sat there watching me play through a few levels in Klonoa and he was really excited about it. But then I give him a turn and he still sucks
>>
>buy my brother a Gameboy Advance SP for his 6th birthday

There's where you fucked up. You should have given him a GBA that isn't shit.
>>
>>252253587
All this technical gobbledygook would make *me* want to just give up and play some phone game.

>WW1
Step it up, senpai.
Still, it's actually pretty depressing how amazing you can be at videogames at such a young age if you give a shit. Whenever I joined a random server in Call of Duty 4 or Counter-Strike at the age of 12, I would always get at least double the k/d of the person in second place. Never gave enough of a shit to go competitive, but whatever. Used to play a bunch of shit like STALKER (my brother really liked Russian culture for some reason) and the like on the hardest difficulty possible just cause.

I think you're forgetting that he's 6
He has small hands that are perfect for the SP, and he should definitely not get cramps at his age
>>
>>252254728
STALKER is pretty terrible when you're not on Master, though. Your guns have the same accuracy and damage as your opponents.
>>
>>252255359
>He has small hands that are perfect for the SP

No, they'd be perfect for the Micro. The SP is a terrible size for all hand sizes.
>>

>comfy as fuck

>look around for a second
>fucking die cause I had 10% health left from a fire fight and had no medkits
It was hard as hell, and I saved often because of how often you can die from stupid shit, but that was the life right there. I tried booting STALKER back up the other day and couldn't live long enough to get any shit done. Closed the game an hour later (since I couldn't get past the first few missions) and resigned myself to the fact that I suck at video games now.
At least I'm pretty OK at fitans. That's something that a kid can't help but button-mash most of the time, so I am glad that I got into them now.
>>
>>252254352

Aren't the Klonoa GBA games more like "puzzle platformers" compared to the console games?

I'm more impressed that he got his hands on a Klonoa game in the first place, unless the GBA games are a lot easier to find than the other ones.

>getting the last cart in DD
I think this is the true test of video game aptitude. If you have the patience, memory, and skill to do this, then you probably have the tools necessary to beat any game.
>>
>>252256192
You're right on both accounts. The games are easier to find, and they are more puzzle based than their console counterparts.
>>
>>252256873
I remember sitting down one day and playing Double Dash through til the end unlocking everything without any breaks and no memory card. It was great and took all day
>>
>>252256192
GBA Klonoa games, at least where I am, tend to be easier to find than the PS1 original or the PS2 sequel. Shame they never localized the GBA ARPG.

>>252252378
To be honest, I don't think a six year old would be ready for Fire Emblem. Pokemon I could see him easily having fun with. Maybe one of the Kirby games would have been better. That said, if he's used to just playing iPorts and mobile games, I doubt he's going to see much point in that anytime soon.

>>252256229
>buying people old shit for their birthday
Maybe it's just me, but I don't mind that sort of thing. Especially if it's a game I'd been looking for but couldn't find on my own.
>>
>>252256423
What you're missing is he's SIX YEARS OLD. No matter WHAT you buy him he will lose interest immediately. You're dealing with a LITERAL toddler, someone who is barely capable of reading basic stuff, barely capable of writing, can't handle sustaining themselves when trying to talk to someone (they get distracted or slip around on their words and stutter a lot and then go off on tangeants), only learned to walk a handful of years prior, and so on.

I'm not sure why you think buying something like a gameboy would be good. Someone 6 years old should be bought crayons and a fucking coloring book, a t-shirt with a cartoon character on it, candy, a toy, etc. Not a video game console - handheld or not. They can keep more interested in things like an ipod touch or those leappad things because there is so much to do on them.

A gameboy is way too complicated for someone that can't even sit in a car without a car seat safely, and kids are supposed to be in those till they are 8+.
>>
>>252257345
You are likely in your 20s. Not a toddler. Kids don't want your 'classic gameboy hits', they want a fucking crayon set and a cute stuffed animal.
>>
>>252257236
Well fuck.
I remember it took something longer than an hour to fucking get the gold kart, not sure how long it would take to get everything. I should look up a speedrun or something.
>>
>>252257982
>6 years old
>crayon set and stuffed animal
Dude you're so fucking out of touch, they want minecraft and cod.
>>
>>252258161
They enjoy both from what I've seen with my nieces and nephews and the kids at my sister-in-law's work (teacher).

It's weird nowadays, but it's a mix of shit like that and shit kids liked in our generation minus pogs.

I think there's a fan forum working on a translation, but progress is slow (I would assume that it would be difficult anyways).

I don't think that it would have had that much success outside of Japan in the first place.
>>
>>252259560
>Spyro
Shit man, that was one of the first games I really got around to enjoying. Make sure he's played all three of the PS1 entries in the series if he hasn't yet.

Good on you, sounds like you've been trying (and succeeding) to give him and his friends some taste in games. Hope he doesn't turn out to be a little shit like most siblings.
>>
>>252259560

Also, it's really good fun and something he'll remember if you play monster hunter with him when he's young (you control the camera, he swings the sword or whatever). Mine still remembers it to this day, even though he was only like 4 years old. This depends on if he sees you playing it and thinks it looks cool and/or wants to play.
>>
>>252259845
The sad thing is that as far as I know, the GBA is rather hard to code a text translation for; something about character and line limits, or something. As such, there haven't been all that many completed patches (main ones that come to mind being Mother 3, Boktai 3, Fire Emblem 6, DQ: Caravan Heart, Oriental Blue, and SRW J; maybe a few others). A lot of times it seems like people just give up on it. I know the Rocket SLime GBA patch hasn't made any progress in years.

you know the horrors (autists, gays, traps, weebs, pedos, furries, feminazis, traps, jews, russians, BRs, fedoras) around video games and you still let him?
>>
>>252260006

Yeah, I really hope so. I've moved out since then (I'm almost 21 now, where he just turned 9 a couple months ago), so I can't really help guide him. He went through a minecraft phase which is fair, but I hope I've at least given him some sense of good games. I got him a couple emulators on a computer before I left, so I hope he's touched them. I know that getting the PS3 controller to work sometimes took some fiddling.

Oh he's nowhere near good at it. But it's not that hard of a game at first. Figured it'd be a great game that didn't require much motor skills, same reason I got pokemon.

I'm going to try and buy him a few other games and hope he can get a grip on at least one of them. Going to try Tetris, Mario Kart(since he decent with double dash), and maybe one of the Final Fantasy ports. He can read pretty well so I'm not too worried about that.

I have an old sidelit one somewhere. For the longest time I didn't even know that wasn't a true backlight; never minded it much at the time since I could at least see what I was playing without fighting glare, or plying at night.

Mainly just utilize my DS Lite's backwards compatibility for GBA games these days.

>>
>>252261749
The earlier ones were sidelit.

Honestly surprised it took so long to get proper lighting for Nintendo handhelds out here. In Japan at least they'd been experimenting with gameboys with built in lights from fairly early on. They just never made it west.
>>
>>252259560
I played a lot of Melee and AirRide with my little sister, started those when she was like 5 years old. Now she's 15 and has a 3DS, pretty much just plays Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, the Mario RPGs and 64, and Animal Crossing.
I tried to get her to play WWHD but I feel like she gets frustrated too easily and she can't get the hang of sailing around and I can't imagine how she'd figure out where to go and she'd just get bored and go play something else. I mean she's nearly beaten LA, OoT3D, and ALBW but WindWaker is a pain. With the million other electronic things that kids can go do instead of being 'stuck' in some part of a game it's amazing they ever play them for more than a little while because god forbid they have to think about how to solve something for more than 5 minutes.

I wish gaming would die so that this mainstream garbage would end, then we could start again without these interactive movies like Heavy Rain or Last of Us being the most popular stuff in the industry and Call of Duty controlling the market, things called "experiences" being marketed as games.

>>
>>252262465
I never had problems with reading until about three years back. Could blow through a book a day, but since then I just have trouble keeping my thoughts straight in my head, or finishing a sentence or anything like that, so reading's anything heavier than 4chan is a bit of a tall order.
Still have a small collection of non-fiction I want to read sometime.
>>
>>252262678
Yeah I get what you mean. Sometimes I have to go back and re-read a sentence or paragraph due to my mind just pulling a blank on me

>>252263006
That's just kind of my default state of mind nowadays. Rare that I have a day where I'm not pulling a constant blank. Doctor says it's all psychological, so at least I don't have brain cancer or whatever.
>>
>>252262652
Not real sure what that means, but it does look rather hard to work with.

I was more or less getting at text in particular being annoying to deal with. I recall Tomato saying he had to pretty much create something to get around how hard the translation was proving to implement without having to do a lot of trimming, and that even creating something like that took a lot of effort.

Using emulators and controller-to-USB converters, the plan will be to play from the NES forward as follows:

>Age seven (7)
NES

>Age nine (9)
SNES
Genesis
Arcade games (I may have to build a working MAME cabinet.)
Text adventure games (Adventure, Zork, etc.)

>Age ten (10)
N64
PS1
Early PC games (1980s-90s)

>Age eleven (12)
GCN
PS2
Xbox (I may have to dust off an actual Xbox)
Later PC games (1990s-2000s)

>Age thirteen (13)
Wii
PS3 (May need an actual PS3...)
Xbox 360 (...and an actual 360, if they haven't made emulators by the time I bear children. This should be a good twenty (20) years, though)
Less modern PC games (2000s-2010s)

After that, depending on the rate that consoles are released, I'll continue weaning them year after year. Also, the PC games will go along with the console generations, I guess.
