They make a huge deal in the show about how hard it was for Korra to learn airbending, which has a fighting style that primarily includes rapid movement and dodging attacks instead of deflecting them.
It's the opposite of the first series where Aang had trouble learning Earthbending because his instinct was to always dodge attacks.
To be honest a parry system sounds fine to me. Partially because it fits thematically, but more so because it feels more fun to me to be able to block/reflect enemy attacks with proper skill and timing than it does to just dodge them.

The Book 2 blurays have some nice audio commentary from the creators. A lot of behind the scenes stuff is revealed.
For example, when Nick ordered 3 more seasons of Korra during season 1, they had to completely rewrite the endingAsami was going to be revealed to be working with Amon.This was going to be rewritten intoeveryone loses their powers and stays that way, Asami joins the military police with Iroh, and the series endsbut because of the 3 more seasons it was rewritten into what we got.
Additionally, Nick wanted a different story focus for season 2. It was Nicks decision that forced them to make a new plot and drop what they were going to do. They originally were going to follow up on the equalists and have Asami be the main villain but Nick wanted a "bigger and broader" villain so we get the Unalaaq and Vaatu stuff because of Nick

and how's that? performing a parry relies on you being able to hit a button in a very similar way to a qte, and then it basically pauses the game and runs it's little animation giving you free damage on the enemy, while dodging is reliant on perfect timing as you can still mess it up.
