Matchmaking instead of server browsers killed communities.

DLC killed communities.

F2P killed communities.

Dumbing down of games killed communities. (example all Rainbow 6 1-3 communities died because Lockdown/Vegas were made)

And the saturation of games killed communities. No longer do people stick with only 1 game, but they play many games and lose touch with people.

Could probably come up with more reasons with some time.

guys.. I miss when people talked and acted like this with games. Am I alone? I didn't really partake in typing like that back in the day but I didn't mind it either. Things felt much more vidya oriented when people typed like that. I could see how one would interpret people talking this way as trying to fit in, but I don't think it was that way. It felt like some geek who played 10 hours a day was on the other side of the screen. Normies would see someone typing that way and hate it. Now everyone in multiplayer feels like a normie

communities got too big
example: server sharing and lfr in WoW
there is no sense of community when you push tens of thousands of people together who can do whatever they want and can just head back to their server afterward

another example: 5 dollar ticket to server transfer in WoW

Oversaturation. There's too many multiplayer games to have a proper community based around a specific game. New games and sequels get released so often it's impossible to keep track of if you're attempting to find yourself a community.

Once you find a few people to play with, the next game is out and people move onto that or other things, splitting up that community.

That isn't to say communities don't still exist, they do but are more around games that are going to stick around for a while, I.e Counterstrike, ASSFAGGOTS, occasional MMOs maybe.

WoW was the last big community game and eventually the target audience for that game changed to a more casual experience because that's who wants to play now.
>>
>>250024345
I miss it, it was way of excluding normalfags from games and fostering our own culture that was difficult for outsiders to penetrate.

At one point in history you had to actually have some intelligence to use a personal computer and some decent bank to even own one. In that period of history you could go online and act like a fool and it was understood by everyone else that you were just joking and being funny.

Today, any fucking retarded yahoo can use the internet from any number of devices and be retarded in cyberspace.

There are lots of reasons however one that affects me the most is MLG and other company sponsored tournaments.

Before a Quake tournament or a Starcraft tournament was simple. Someone who loves the game has the money to rent out a venue, they advertise that they are holding a tourney and maybe there's an entry fee to go back to the guy who payed for the venue.

Then we all get to together and have one big Lan party tournament. No stream viewers, MAYBE a cash prize, no sponsors just a group of people who love the game who want to hone their skills and show just how much ass they can kick. It was a nice community thing, we all had our part to play in making it happen and it made us really value eachother and the game.

Nowadays large companies will actually create and host tournaments and even invite top players to them. At first this seems cool but overall what it does is turn the scene into money making machine fishing for viewers on twitch and luring in people with promises of BIG MONEY instead of it being a community driven thing by people who genuinely love the game.
>>
>>250024854

This.

There was a time when multiplayer games had everlasting value, games people were passionate about and could play for years and years. Now it's just flavor of the month AAA shit that gets hyped up then everyone quickly loses interest. And like others in this thread said, normalfags really getting into vidya and the internet ruined shit.

Alot of people on /v/ hate Dota 2, but it's one of the only multiplayer games left that has that early 2000's feel to it.

"Dumbing down" is subjective, even if valid in some cases (Like the one you mentioned).

It's mostly matchmaking instead of server browsers (plus the death of dedicated servers), and market saturation.

I know exactly how you feel.

I attended a LANWAR back in 06 (maybe 07, I forget) and the main draw was the LAN but it included tournaments for prizes by the guys hosting the event.

It was a fun weekend. Met some dudes who played the same games as me, I was on a team that competed in a CS1.6, DoD, and I myself competed in a WC3 tourney solo. There were also things like a Guitar Hero invitational, a Ms. gamer pageant, and a Tug-of-war (My team placed second because we had two big guys on our side). During the event there were announcements for when somebody would set up a server for play (like UT3, Worms, or SC) and people would hop in. People casually would walk around other tables and strike up conversation about system specs or games. I can recall getting into multiple conversations about anime at the time, it was part of the reason I started watching it shortly after.

The competitions were nothing televised or serious, they were fun. The winner got a prize (like a t-shirt from a sponsor or a food voucher to a restaurant in the area) and aside from some friendly name-calling there was no intense spite or hatred for competitors. After the event was over many of us even stayed to help clean up the tables and help the sponsor guys put away their speakers and chairs. It was more like a community thing.

Flash forward to today and you can see the difference. Like you said, it's driven by money and nothing good comes from that.

TL;DR Capitalism ruins everything.

okay so listen to this theory. XP ruined communities.

So back in the day playing games (mainly fps games i guess) was just about the game. No leveling, no perks, no unlocks. But now almost every single game has these.

So now instead of playing the game for either the sake of competition or even fun, people play for the XP.

But of course people play for fun still you might say. But have you ever heard someone say I want to unlock XYZ already so i can stop playing! Or I'm so sick of this gun but I want to get XYZ! I'm so sick of this map but I want this achievement!!!

So instead of forming bonds with people with similar competitive natures, or conversely instead of forming bonds with people who like to dick around instead of being competitive. Both are ignored and the focus is on the items instead of those around them. This leads to less desire to form a bond with other people since your focus is not on them.

Also since sorting through unlocks and customization can take a long time, people stop playing the game and instead leave servers to fix their chracter or customize their guns. Then rejoin another random server with new people they dont care about.

Also shit like hats etc. trading in games like DOTA2, TF2, CSGO. makes it so people can't wait for the end of the map to come or time to progess for their items. Most people I knew who played tf2 stopped playing but were still logged on every day to trade or idle for items.

So in summary, items/xp/unlocks helped destroy communities in certain respects.

I completely agree with you.

I remember when I got into the Dota 2 beta in late 2011, I gave one of my spare invites to a friend who played Warcraft 3 DotA, HoN then was playing LoL alot. We played for a bit, but he quickly lost interest and went back to LoL. I asked him why, and he said "there is no account leveling, unlocks or anything, so what's the point of playing?" Sure, eventually Dota 2 did get account leveling and cosmetics, so did CS GO, but I enjoyed those games even before they added those, and continue enjoying them while not giving a shit about the cosmetics, the fact that I'm making money from playing those games now is just a nice bonus.

When did the whole XP/unlock fad start? When did people decide that they will only play games that have XP and unlocks? Was it CoD4 and LoL? Maybe WoW? (remember, not only was WoW alot of people's first MMORPG, it was their first RPG too)

I think it started with Battlefield 2. It had weapons you could unlock over a VERY long time, and you had to make some real choices on which ones you wanted to unlock 1st.

Then CoD4 kicked it into MASSIVE overdrive with its unlock and leveling system and almost every single game made since CoD4 has had a similar type of system. Even Red Orchestra 2 caved and adopted that same system.

The only major FPS games i can think of that don't have it are Arma games, but the multiplayer mods like wasteland or altis life have their own versions of it, where you unlock items with money you grind for.

I miss getting into filemanager to find my hidden stash of porn in Win3.11.

My parents never knew.

Off topic, and a wild shot in the dark at that, but does anybody remember back in the old ages of porn when people set up there own sites to post nudes of themselves? I have been searching for over 20 years to find this one gal I had fapped to countless times when I was a wee laddy. She was distinct in my mind for the following: She did public nudity, she had a weird tramp stamp above her ass that looked like a shit-stain on thumbnails, curly mid length hair, many of her shots involved her riding a bicycle, and she had a beautiful smile. My old folder of .bmps were lost when the family computer took a dump on itself and died many years ago, I have not been able to find that girl ever since. This is my desperate cry from the bottom of the world's lowest hole, someone save me.

Social media caused mass interest to come into the internet. It will never be the same again. We didn't grow up on a mass media internet like those now. We lived in what could be considered the "Wild West" even. Hell, when was the last time you got a virus anon? Not a pussy ass modern day bug, but and honest, rape your machine to death virus? We live in a pacified world now and there is no going back.

Everything changes.

You are not the same person you used to be, you are an evolution of the person of yesterday with more experiences and self-awareness. In a world of constant change and chaos it is best to remember what was and continues to move forward because it is impossible to cling to the past successfully.

As much as I would like to be my 19-year old self again, it will never happen. Everything rots.

both

The userbase changed more than the people who already browsed it though, the internet as a whole is vastly more popular than it was even just 4 years ago, social media is now the driving force and the very focus of social media has changed from a neat way to keep in contact with your friends to a way to advertise and get statistics on millions of people.

The difference in social media then, like myspace, and the social media of now like twitter and facebook is staggering. Companies take the internet seriously now so it's all commercialized and seen as a way to gain money, everything now wants your name and to get your statistics on what you view.
